Have a happy!

I know our foreign members will shrug since the 4th of July is a unique holiday for citizens of the US of A, but I like this holiday.

We beat the British, and developed a very successful Representative Republic.

Our Constitution may have had it's roots in the Magna Carta, but we sure have carried it forward!

And just as a PSA, even from the ATS residential booze-hound. . . . don't drink and do fireworks.

Do one or the other, but not both. Kay?

Now I must out gawdy my friends on appearance (I'm going all pit too, bout to butcher this beard).

Get my day cooler ready (lots of beer, a few waters, and a few drinks with electrolytes).

Smoke some Nathan's hot dogs for lunch....

Happy 4th of July, all! Thanks for the birthday thread for America, DB!
This is a nice tribute.
Yesterday my Chinese student was the first to wish me a happy 4th-- I thought that was great.

I think my proudest US moment was when a former student who had asked for a letter of recommendation for political asylum contacted me to tell me it had been granted.
I felt honored for my country where a young man could find peace after all the horror he had witnessed in the Congo.
He's working here now and about to graduate college. I'm sure he's going to continue to make positive waves everywhere he goes. He's a remarkable young man.

In honor of America, here's some purple mountain majesty to enjoy

We do a fireworks show every year. One year a few grand in mortars and mortar boxes.... We drank too much.

Some one lit a box and it tipped over....

I was out in the field lighting with them, in the fog of war. I heard someone say get down. The first few shot short towards us. It was night time and through the smoke you could only see the crowd with each flash. It was like being in a smokey room with a strobe light. Each flash the crowd was yards away from their last position.

Luckily no on got hurt.

Now we get ply wood and screw down every mortar tube. A separate staging area for the boxes on ply wood, each box has to be between cinder blocks and we prep the fuses and have flashlights so we know they're facing the right way.

And most importantly, the people lighting have to be sober. 👍

In hindsight it was hilarious because no one got hurt. But I've heard stories that made me know we were lucky.
