I've been having issues with my VPN's DNS servers the past 24 hours, confirmed by them, I switched over to cloudflare's.

Worked, it seemed, but still having more issues now.

Anyone else having DNS issues or hear of any attacks on them or something. Seems strange to me that BOTH are having issues.

Hard to say without the pulse map, but maybe akamai could help figure this out.

There has been much in the way of DNS attacks of late.

Also hijacks of DNS in netgear routers.

First , what is the nature of the DNS issue ?
DNS or DHCP ?
ISP or VPN ?

Just checked Checkpoint
Trojan.Linux and Trojan.Win32 running wild over the world
Kaspersky looking normal . US is ranking 4th (that is actually good)

Nothing out of the ordinary

The DNS Servers I use for the VPN aren't working. My Regular ISP's is. I contacted NordVPN after I spent a few hours checking all my stuff over, they confirmed their DNS servers are having issues. Recommended I use Cloudflares. I switched over to those and it worked for a while, now those seem to not be resolving either.

Found it odd that those two where both having the issues. Disabling my VPN setup in my router and everything works fine with all traffic and DNS requests going through my ISP.

My guess then ?
Server/Switch/Router patching due to little traffic for Good Friday and Easter Sunday .
Almost as good of time as New Years Eve.
"Redundancy , redundancy , and more redundancy" ?
And failover . There is a reason it is called fail over.

OP has a S&F from me due to the fact that they are my most favorite poster of all time
And , you have a star.

I guess this is off-topic .
But I gave my professional opinion already.

Correction

The recent DNS router issues are with D-Link.

This is an aside, but if you want to increase your Internet speed, one of the best things you can do is choose the best DNS service. Google engineers wrote a script to ping out a large list of DNS servers and at the end of the script it will spit out the best. Changing to those can increase your real world speed by up to 15%. I'm on a phone so it's a pain to find the script. But with a little go ogling you can find it.

On topic, I've also had DNS issues in the past with "whole-house" VPN setup on my router using an ASUS mid-tier router. I eventually gave up and setup a proxy using Nord.

Tell me, when your VPN is active on your router, are you able to reach your routers address? Asus has a built-in cnam for their routers address which would cause a loop when the router-based VPN was active. You'd type in your routers address and the routers record would start to auto-resolve to myasus.router or something and with VPN active this would fail.

I HATE that it resolves my routers IP to that stupid myasus hostname. #ing hate it! Whoke-house VPN would be perfect without it.

I actually rarely have an issue when I do it at the router. I used to have dropouts all the time with the software based stuff. Plus I have a lot of PC's and wanted it to cover them all.

All I use is ASUS routers(netgear for switches), home and at work(very small network for a business).

I have none of the issues you mention, though I do use an alternate firmware than the stock one(merlin).

I can reach all my routers easily by their address and never get redirected to the myasus that you mention.

Interesting.

Well, is this still an issue? You could reflash to base firmware and see if it makes a difference.

However, if Nordic is admitting to some DNS problems I'd either wait it out or spin up a proxy on Vultr until it's fixed.

I did flash the latest firmware, to no effect. After that(and shutting down and rebooting everything for the 3rd time) I contacted my VPN provider.

They said the problem IS on their end. I'll just run "naked" for a few days and try to set my VPN back up on sunday night or monday. It's not the hugest issue.

A larger company like that is most likely working on the problem 24 hours a day. So another 24 to 36 hours I can't imagine it won't be resolved.

The good news is I've spent atleast 3 hours flushing out and resetting up all my gear. So it should be good for the next 3-4 years.

Next time setup a port monitor using some tcp monitoring software to port 53 (dns) and set the interval rate as high as it will go. You could at least tell if it's intermittent or not.

But here's the thing. If they are having issues with their DNS then it would fail over using gslb to another pair (in round Robin usually). Sometimes if you run an nslookup fast enough or quickly enough you can catch the bad response and good response. That is another way to expose a load-balancing member issue.

Don't look up any porn during this time or your ISP WILL know!

I have my VPN policy restrictions set up so that if my VPN is down, I don't have ANY internet connectivity. That works pretty well as an indicator of whether or not I have a problem.

No internet, is no VPN "coverage".

I'm honestly really not trying to hide my internet usage, but would rather depend on the very basic(and cheap) service a security provider(VPN) provides over what a local ISP provides. You have one(maybe two choices, how capitalist) when it comes to ISP providers. VPN providers base their service(and revenue) around a more stringent service and they have a larger pool of competition.

I specify the DNS servers manually in my router, so I don't think there is any rollover. They are either functioning or they are not. The biggest inconvenience of an outage like this is the time I spend diagnosing my hardware, under the assumption it's a problem on my end.
