This is no surprise that a country look to disconnect from the grid in case of agressive internet war targetting vital assets like military/transportation/telecom. Haven't heard of USA doing the same but my question is: would it be feasible and can't attackers put some automated malwares inside that isolated grid? To what extend would it be thorough?

From ZDNET:

www.zdnet.com...

Russian authorities and major internet providers are planning to disconnect the country from the internet as part of a planned experiment, Russian news agency RosBiznesKonsalting (RBK) reported last week.

Most of the US government depends on Amazon cloud services. They're likely all in the us, but disconnecting from world services for an extended period will cause unplanned disruptions. Random things will break right away- much more will break after 24 hours.

Their test is neat, and will teach them much about how much they depends on the internet. Even an isolated test in the US would cause chaos four days after connectivity was restored.

If they've already been infected it won't do any good.

It's just not feasable to do in the us.

The economy would take a massive hit since so much is done now.

I don't think this is about protecting russian infrastructure from outside threats, this is about getting control of the infrastructure

I hope when they turn it back on Putin gets one of those “Congratulations IPhone user!” Pop ups that are impossible to get rid of.
I can just see him all red faced trying to X it out.

As newspapers ,the printed word pictures and information were, what could be the alternative to the internet? Perhaps their exploring. The internet is only one side of technology.

They say to think outside the box...

Oh, heaven's no. This actual purpose of this is certainly to provision resources. Surely. Only question is what are they deploying?

When you think about the implications of society functioning without the internet for even just one day, well, it’s quite frightening. It’s as vital as food, water, and air. It happened so fast, too. Wonder what Russia foresees coming to pass for the future of internet access and usage!

Most of Russias infrastructure and military is not connected to the internet like ours is. They are way smarter than we are here in America. I do not know how Europe's tie in with the internet is, whether they are at great risk or not. I won't even hook up Alexa or Hey Google in my house to anything like lights or heat. But we still have a smart meter on the house someone might be able to hack, heck, I am sure the whole electric company can get hacked here. Our country is not very secure with things that should be a concern.

I would be willing to wager most countries have an intranet (not to be confused with internet)
If they don't , they should
Especially , in light of the ceding of control of all the internet backbone servers to an unknown foreign private business by Barry
My guess ? Saudi Arabia

We should plan for it and when they disconnect block them permanently so they can't reconnect. That would be a hoot and a half.

A smart thermostat would be cool for reasons of laziness. I don’t think it’s a good plan though. I foresee our AC and furnace being controlled. Imagine it’s a heatwave and you are stopped from setting the AC and have to suffer or during a polar vortex you can’t crank the heat? That will be happening. Might be after I’m dead but I’m not taking my chances on spending my last days not controlling my own body temperature.

So no, we will not get disconnected, they need to control us

A WiFi meshnet can be created and if it can reach beyond Russian control, it could get an internet connection. Not too mention using a satellite dish for a connection. I doubt that you could stop the internet completely, even if all you would have is a private wireless LAN.
