Government: 5,842 were exposed to biological, chemical agents

While America was at war in Vietnam in the 1960s, another painful -- and secret -- chapter in the nation's military history was playing out in
far-flung locations ranging from the Pacific Ocean to the North Atlantic, from Alaska to Yeehaw Junction in Central Florida.
The Department of Defense was using its own aircraft -- and even submarines and tugboats -- to disperse bacteria and chemicals on U.S. servicemen,
vessels and towns for a Cold War-era testing program. At the time, the Pentagon told nobody it was using military personnel as lab rats to see how
vulnerable America and its ships were to biological and chemical agents.
