Well, cinnamon didn't work. I'm having a hard time myself with the missus, Mother in Law and daughter. I wish there was a sort of fairy dust I could sprinkle on their dinner after I cook and then wash up. Can't even crack a joke.

Oh, sorry, this is FCD's rant.

Hate the moon this time of year.

Kind regards,

bally

(SIGH) This isn't going how I'd hoped.

A number of folks seem to be all wrapped around the axle about the money part. It's not just a kitchen job, and for those worried about the age of the house; it was always an intended upgrade since new. It's hard to explain, and I don't really feel like going into it...(because it will just make me more grumpy). In the end it will probably be a lot cheaper if I take my labor out of it, so whatever. I probably should have phrased it differently.

Sorry to have burdened anyone.

I’m sure it will all look beautiful when it’s done FCD... and will even be more enticing with the aroma of cinnamon in the air.

You work hard for your money., and you can spend it any way you see fit.

And it makes your wife happy... that’s a huge bonus right there.

Wishing you a smooth ride through the renos !

Do you mind if I ask what it was that you loved about this house so much that you decided to go to these kinds of lengths to renovate it versus building an entirely new home exactly the way you would want it from the beginning? Is there something special about the location?

That is going to be one amazing kitchen when done.
I can relate to the expense.
Ours came in just over $90k all said an done, not including the flooring and we are already talking upgrading.
Hell the Smart Range alone was $14,000. after taxes.
Depending on the needs and desires, a kitchen can cost more than what most peoples homes are worth.

Oh dear, I feel for you. Women have their moments.

Just curious. 7 x 9, island. Thats feet I presume.

I'm honestly trying to figure how you would reach across to use the whole 7' width.

(PS put some of your own touches into it, ie so it becomes part of your dream kitchen as well. LOL)

$150 grand on a KITCHEN? Was that a typo, did you mean $15 grand? Why the hell would anyone spend as much as some houses cost on ONE room? o.O That boggles, I'd call Aug and DB and have them discretely dispose of my husband if he spent that much on only one room in the house, the hell.

You can't call me cause I think I dropped the same on mine.

I got your back man.

I'd pick your pocket while I do that but your wallet looks empty.

This is entire thread is a perfect example of why people hate the US (and those who try to emulate them). Some people have no concept of the value of a dollar, or worse, they do and there is a bigger problem in the picture.

The kitchen is the most used place in the house. Why shouldn't someone spend how much they like on it.

Its not your money.

In a word; location. It was really the land more than anything. The house actually started out as a custom 'spec home', we didn't design it. It was about 80% of the way done when we bought it. We knew all along we were going to change some things and we factored this into the cost of the purchase price. The market was in our favor so we were able to purchase the property for our target price. The builder had done some things we probably wouldn't have done design wise, but at that point it didn't make sense to change directions (and it wasn't really financially feasible). So we just let him finish it in the direction he was headed.

Now it's time to address the things we wanted originally, and this is what we're doing now. We're not getting any younger and would like to have the time to enjoy our ultimate goal for a while rather than wait. It's really just as simple as that.

I'm kind of disappointed so many took occasion to criticize without knowing the facts, but I was ranting too so I shouldn't expect too much slack.

It will be nice when it's done.

ETA - The kitchen in particular probably would have been great for a family who didn't like to cook. That's not us; we LOVE to cook and spend probably the most time in the kitchen (except for maybe sleeping in the bedroom). Not to mention the fact that the wife is actually a "Chef" (i.e. Culinary graduate).

No. Don't change - be yourself.

Some people spend thousands for a couple of weeks on a cruise ship. Go figure.

You don't have to account for whats important in your life that you won't compromise on.

Some pics of the progress would be nice - but you'd probably trigger somebody.

Why cant people wish other people success. Culture of envy?

Pretty sure the only ones being “burdened” are the socialists who undeniably hate capitalism. Your money, which you earned. Spend and enjoy as you please.

We are still in a starter home we bought in 1985. Barring mother nature, we’ll likely die here. I begrudge no one their successes.

If I'm not mistaken, you're fairly new at retirement from a job where you traveled a lot? How are you adjusting overall? Better yet, how's your wife adjusting? Ha!

Gawd, are you kidding??? We have cattle...I'll never get to retire!! LOL!!

That, plus I'm still working at my "day job" (coming up on 30 years seniority).

I've probably got another 5 to go before I'll throw in the towel and just stick with the cattle.

Everyone is just jealous that they don't have a hundred and fifty grand to spend on their kitchen. That is why they are all clutching their, I am ASSuming here, homemade macaroni and string pearls stand-in. Why buy pearls when everyone has macaroni and string just lying around the house. Don't you know, if you used upcycled cardboard instead of Maple on the cabinets, you could get the price down to three hundred and fifty dollars. That is one hundred and forty nine thousand six hundred and fifty dollars you could spend on Russian bots, so you can sway a local election.

What this thread is really about, is decades of precedent.

"Hey, you know...we're NOT keeping those counters, Bob!!"'

Is not a rant worthy statement. Until you have been married forever. Then it becomes another battle in the war for your sanity.
