This is horrendous.

While we are at it i also dont like the St. Anger album. Its actually the only album by them i dont like. Not one song on that album is good. But they redeemed themselves on the next albums. Deathmagnetic was amazing.

Why not cover it?
Just cover it with some level of musicianship.

They were in Minneapolis so I get why they did a prince song there.

That cover does not reflect their ability and they are professional musicians.

Honestly i would expect as much from Hammet.
But Robert I believe is a classically trained badass that can rip a bass (and regular guitar) in almost any style he sees fit.

Iv heard Hetfield say that Metallica as a band isn’t that great at jamming/improvising . It has to be written and well rehearsed for them to pull it off... looks like they should have spent some more time on this one...

When I heard about it I was thinking no way it's that bad. Maybe people just didn't like it cause it was Prince metal style.

If you're 8 months in on the guitar and this is the first song you learn then I get it.

These are capable musicians.

The song is great im not saying it shouldn't be covered, i love the song. But I think its obvious why they shouldn't do the cover. Im agreeing with your OP. I dont know if they even could do a good cover of that song, i dont think its in their blood.

Metallica is really good even without James there but even their talents have boundries.

Nah, see, Lars sold his soul to the devil as a teenager in return for being in the worlds best heavy metal band, but it was only for 30 years... he didn't care, he thought it'd be over by then. Now the devil has taken the gift back and the magic is gone, but they think they're still something great and so we're hearing what they would have sounded like all along.
