I like to read about new discoveries like this but when the commentator said the sphinx was wore by the sea washing over it my bubble burst. The nearest sea is the Red Sea and that is 300+ miles away. Plus the Giza plateau is 60 metres above sea level.
Let ME give you something to think about (I actually e mailed Robert Schock with this) there are quite a few sphinx's in Egypt and ALL of them bar the great sphinx are proportional in their carving.
The Egyptians knew about scale and proportions and all the other sphinx are proportionally correct. EXCEPT the great sphinx. Look at it, really look at it. The head is too small for it's body yet the Egyptologists keep coming up with different theories without admiting to the real reason which is the sphinx wasn't carved with a human head in the first place.

The link talks about Giza but other reports are saying it's near Karnak and Luxor.

Yeah, well that link is the Express - which is trash.

The idea that sphinx is ill proportion and the head may have been re-purposed is well-known and is one of the many theories extant. 'They don't admit' anything because that is not known all we have are theories, lots of them.

One reason it looks odd it was carved out of a quarry - ie stone was removed around it. So it may have not been planned but an idea that came up later.

There are at least two evidenced hypotheses about this.
- One is that the layer of limestone around the lower neck and shoulders was found by the AEs to be too weak to hold up a head that was proportional so the head had to be downsized.

- The other involves a crack that runs through the entire limestone bed and across the sphinx near the hindquarters.
If the body was in proportion to the head, the crack would be immediately in front of the rear haunches of the statue, and they may have been concerned that the butt would fall off.

No way to tell which one is right, or if either one is. But both are reasonable in that the particular layer of limestone IS very weak, and the crack WOULD be just in front of the haunches if the body was shorter.

Yeah that might considered a bad omen!
