The head is too small for it's body yet the Egyptologists keep coming up with different theories without admiting to the real reason which is the sphinx wasn't carved with a human head in the first place.

If the body was in proportion to the head, the crack would be immediately in front of the rear haunches of the statue, and they may have been concerned that the butt would fall off.
