Which administration is it?

The following is an opinion piece....

For nearly a decade, a question has been haunting our national life. It is whether the Republic will live or die.

The question has been asked in countless forms.

May newspapers print whatever they wish to print, and the people read whatever they wish to read?

May the people assemble without fear of injury or loss of life?

Must senators and others always support the President in his difficult decisions?

Are the people to be treated like children or like adults?

To what extent does the government have the power to check up on what the people are doing?

To what extent do the people have the right to check up on what the government is doing?

The President has dismissed the man charged by Congress and the Attorney General with discovering any wrongdoing in the White House.

The potential defendant fired the prosecutor and defied the judge.

...

On this occasion, as on many others in recent years, the President has flouted the law.

He has not merely broken the law; he has overthrown the law.

...

The question of whether the Republic will live or die has now been decisively posed in this form: Will we remove a lawless Administration from office or will we submit to illegitimate rule?

...

When the President launched the country into the worst Constitutional crisis in its history, he explained that he had done it to avoid a Constitutional crisis. But it was not a Constitutional crisis that the President wished to avoid—it was the Constitution.

The problem we all face now is not how to avoid a Constitutional crisis but how to resolve one. And the only resolution the President has left to us, unless he resigns, is for Congress to begin consideration of impeachment proceedings.

Who are we talking about?

That's the question - I'm not putting the source up yet. But I will never fear.

I want an honest response. And honest thought out the content.

I think the author and too many ignore the elephant in the room.

presidents come and go. They make speeches, push agendas, sign stuff.


But it is congress that makes the laws. And until we get term limits (which will never happen) things will stay the same.


Constitutional crisis?

Hell yeah!


But it's congress that is the tumor on our country. Both republicans and democrats.

The point being that this is a recurring theme in US history - The executive run amok.

I believe it was George Washington who believed (having studied classic history) that the US Republic had a 70 year life-span before tyranny took over.

What happened after 70 years - The Civil War.

Maybe there is a cycle involved here.

I have having trouble finding the exact Washington quote; however this is apropos the breakdown of separation of powers.

From Washingtons final speech as President:

It is important, likewise, that the habits of thinking in a free country should inspire caution in those entrusted with its administration,

to confine themselves within their respective constitutional spheres,

Wasn't that quote about Nixon? The ultimate disgrace of a president...There were tons of illegal activities in his White House...most of it was discovered on his very own tapes.
