When I was in boot camp at Lackland AFB, Our barracks CQ was on the first floor, down a hallway, between the male and female ends of the building. I was called down to report to some a##hole in a state troopers hat, lol jk...and there were four or five TI's (in '93 they were referred to as Training Instructors, not Drill Instructors) all sitting around watching Gunnery Sgt. Hartman tear Cowboy a new one inside the office. I will never forget how they were laughing their butts off at the part where Hartman inquires if it's ok for him to be in charge for a while. Lol.

Rest easy Gunny, you will be missed but never forgotten.

Ermey was definitely an entertaining guy, I'll miss his work, for sure.

As others have mentioned, he also had a TV program about weaponry called Mail Call.

Here's a snippet of an out-take (language warning)

Rest in peace Chief, thanks for the laughs

So sad, no words.

Great actor, friendly guy.

Another great one has left.

Sucks. Star of one of the most memorable scenes in movie history. I doubt anyone will play a drill Sargent as well as he did.

Drill Instructor.

People always focus on Full Metal Jacket (for good reason) but he was also an excellent supporting actor in other movies as well. I enjoyed his performance in "Mississippi Burning", and of course, his TV show on the History Channel (when they still did History) "Mail Call".

He will be missed.

Why, in the movie, do they call him Sir? In the UK a Sergeant is never called Sir, that is reserved for officers. A Sergeant hates being called Sir, they consider it an insult and will let you know in no uncertain terms. In the UK nobody can join the army as a Sergeant, it is a hard earned rank. People can join as an officer though. RIP Sarge.

In boot camp, the rules are different. Once you get out of boot camp, it's the same as in the UK.

Man, this is a major loss. He will be missed.

No, it's a Staff Sergeant loss... Sorry, bit of rank humor there. He was one hell of an actor where military roles were concerned and quite personable in his handful of TV shows.

Semper Fi Indeed.

The man needs a full military funeral with honors. I even suspect some people enlisted due to his portrayal of his profession while in the armed forces.

My dad was a DS in the late 70's early 80's. I asked him if it was really anything like the movie, he just said
"worse".....
