Many aspects of our modern life benefit from (and sometimes depend on) spaceflight. Exploration of the Solar System will always have a place in public consciousness and scientific interest.

Ultimately we develop the tools to control our solar neighbourhood (fast propulsion and long endurance missions, outposts) or we will get whacked and go extinct. The difference between us and the other species on the planet is we could do something about it, we just can't be arsed.
