[Sorry, I don't know how to embed pictures at ATS. I see the "insert an image from your library" icon, but it brings up a blank/black box with a slider that doesn't do anything]

What does it mean? Heck if I know. Probably something to do with those stupid goose stepping Norks.

The other radar ship here in Hawai'i, if it even classifies as a ship (it has a walnut radar built on top of a oil rig platform with outboard motors) received orders to go play with the USS Carl Vinson a while back. For the last few years, it was docked at Pearl Harbor, occasionally leaving to do errands.

The crew are due shore leave. The ship needs maintenance and re-provisioning. There are a number of reasons why ships dock.

They used to stop at Pearl and Honolulu two or three times a year. Just normal stops for shore leave, or minor maintenance. Both SBX and these are used as range telemetry ships for Barking Sands and Kwaj.

These big ass radar ships are specifically for tracking missiles (there could be other big ass radar ships that do other things).

It's currently docked where the cruise ships harbor. I would think if it coming in for repair/maintenance, it'd be over at Pearl Harbor, where its ugly looking sister lives.

They're technically civilian ships so they can go to either. It depends on how busy Pearl is and how much room they have. If the security dock is occupied or unavailable they go to Honolulu.

There were two Minutemen missiles launched from California in the last month. They were fired to the missile range at Kwajallain. The timing is right for them returning from the second test.

Thank you for the explanation, Z. The other one, the oil rig platform version, definitely is out parading with the USS Carl Vinson, somewhere near the Pacific Ocean by Japan. That rig, called the Sea Based X Band Radar vessel, was docked here in Pearl Harbor undergoing upgrades and tests. Supposedly it was dubbed a failure, in many ways. Poor design, operational costs and maintenance should have obsoleted the project. It's been rusting away and gets poor mileage, thus the need for the 1.8M gallon diesel tanks. During its time here in Hawaii, most of the electronics had to be replaced and upgraded because the radar tracking technology did not work.

It was. They had a number of issues with the radar resulting in several failed tests. It could track the missiles fine, it just couldn't communicate with the interceptors, or guide them to the target. They had to rewrite the software for it. The most recent tests have been fine as far as the radar goes. The interceptor is another story.

If you live in the Honolulu area then you must be aware that a lot of government vessels including those belonging to DHS and such dock regularly there for maintenance and repairs, yes? In fact their biggest satellite ship/rig that floats around in the Pacific intercepting and recording calls between the US and other countries actually makes it's home port in Honolulu. It's other port is somewhere up in the Bering Sea in Alaska. Occasionally they dock in Seattle for emergency repairs and maintenance. There are several of these type of surveillance vessels running around in your neck of the woods so not really an unusual occurrence.

Especially spy ships. Some spy equipment there.

Not just cable tv for the troops. Time out, asian pivot needs to refuel.
