Turkey has blocked all access inside the country to the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia, one of the world's most popular websites.

It was not initially clear why the ban had been imposed.

The Turkey Blocks group said the site was inaccessible from 08:00 (05:00 GMT) by order of the Turkish authorities.

People in the capital Istanbul were unable to access any Wikipedia pages without using a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

Turkey blocks Wikipedia, no reason given, the start of the dictatorship.

With the recent increase in his powers Erdogan is clearly now moving towards his Islamic State and dictatorship, he's becoming another Saddam Hussein etc.

He threatens a release of torrents of migrants unless he's paid very well, shelters IS soldiers in Turkish hospitals while claiming war on IS and now he seems to be waging war on his own people with these new powers. How long before the internet is fully censored there, how long before any Non Muslims don't meet his wants and they get targetted.

How long before the EU give him membership and the money demands really step up, despite all the posturing by the EU and Britain about how there's no plans to allow Turkey to be in the EU we know that plans and very ongoing plans are there to allow Turkey to join because of this by the EU to build a block of members.

The worry for me is that Turkey with its ultra Radical Islamic leader will be the direct feed of all the very people we see now in growing numbers looking to attack.

But it also concerns that the powers he has will be (and are now) being used to crush any one and every person he see's as any thing against him and his power base.

Did he not arrest half the teaching profession soon after the coup attempt? Not a regime that likes the idea of people knowing things.

Turkey will not be joining the EU with Erdogan as Dictator.

The restrictions he imposes will find opposition.

The Turkish Civil War will begin when he creates enough opposition.

The chance to destabilize another Islamic country will not be wasted.

Expect to see modern Turkey destroyed.

Controlling information is controlling dissent. But have no fear. Information is currency, and the more you regulate it and try to stifle it the more that people will crave it, causing an opposite effect..

While government censorship makes a symbolic statement, it is often rather impractical beyond the short run, given the ubiquitous nature and continual improvements in mass communication technologies and the leaky nature of most social systems.

...censorship is often accompanied by demand for the censored material. Censoring material may call attention to it and make it more attractive.

Though this turn of events is rather frightening. We have learned the outcry from the people in Turkey who are being systematically oppressed, especially the Kurdish population Citation Here "The number of “No” votes was strikingly high in most militant Kurdish towns, where the mayors had been arrested and their administrations turned over to trustees appointed by Ankara. Some of those towns had been reduced to rubble as a result of heavy fighting and have remained under curfew for nearly a year."

Further, this is not the start of a dictatorship, this is a dictatorship just catching it's stride. This is: Turkey's "...electoral authority has justified its decision to validate unstamped ballots which gave President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s “yes” camp a narrow victory" to expand presidential powers. Turkey’s main opposition party will take its appeal to the European Court of Human Rights." Citation Here.

It will be interesting to see how Turkey continues to 'threaten' the EU with the migrants it is keeping, and how the policies of the EU have been more than accepting of economic migrants in their own lands in the past few years. As we are seeing more and more countries closing their borders and rethinking these policies, the time for Erdogan's card to be played on this front dwindles.

Clear, concise statements worth repeating. Some folks can't see the big picture for the cartoons.

Islam and modern government are completely incompatible.

There are no free and enlightened nations with Islam as its primary religion.

4chan trolls changed a buncha pics of Turkish people to pics of roaches and edited some articles. Turkish government shut it down. Atleast that's the word on the street.

Edit to add: it was Edrogens wiki page with the roach picture and apparently he didn't like that too much.

en.wikipedia.org... Tayyip_Erdoğan&diff=775736300&oldid=775736231

Roach pic link.
en.wikipedia.org...ğan &oldid=775736300

Weird... Links are linking to the old edit properly.

Wikipedia blocked across Turkey

...Turkish authorities had been in contact with Wikipedia to press for the removal of content by writers "supporting terror" and also claiming Turkey collaborated with terror groups, according to the media reports. It said the site had failed to respond to the demands and, as a result, the ban was imposed.

I think that blaming terror or terrorists or citing national security is starting to come as an 'easy' excuse to curtail freedoms.
It's appalling.

Side note: making this post I had an odd sense of deja vu! haven't had those for awhile!

It just gets rather annoying and obvious for anyone but the most hardened leftie that where ever Radical (note the Radical) Islam goes the area becomes dumber and more dangerous. To be honest its almost a race between Egypt and Turkey as to who can silences its citizens the fastest, sadly in Egypt the Coptic s are actually being slaughtered as well.

Wikipedia isn't a real concern, its the bit that follows that will worry, a possible lockdown in full..

How long before the followers realise that he's not just silencing critics but them as well.

I highly doubt that. Our global overlords have invested a ton in Turkey.

Erdogan has already done that. Turkey was a model of Secularism even with being a primarily Muslim Country. Now it's just like every other Muslim Country. Too bad he destroyed the power of the Turkish Military, they were Turkey's ultimate guardians. Turkey is the HQ of the Muslim Brotherhood for all intents now.

I think the destruction of modern Turkey has barely begun.

Erdogan has the power of a Dictator on paper.

As he tries to use that power in reality he will make more enemies.

Like Syria there are many who would like to influence the future.

Erdogan will need to use force to deal with them.

Will NATO watch a member state use violence against its people?

The EU is not a option any longer.

Perhaps the Russians will help?

I suspect they have a different outcome they would prefer to see.

Turkey has great strategic value to Russia.

Will protecting investments entail the West supporting a facist Islamic state?

No good solutions here i think.

Funny thread indeed .

Turks will get more democratic and stronger as a result of recent changes.

Wiki needs to get rid off the picture and back to business as usual.
