Someone in the past has used it, probably for hammering tent stakes. It has chips in the face that are covered with the patina.

city water or pump/well? hydrogen sulfide gas is present in places where coal and oil is present, it looks like your in ireland, any coal mining or oil wells your area?
it is also found in wells drilled in shale or sandstone. any of that around you?
