More than any other genre, rappers get accused of being frauds (ie, not real musicians) by people who do not or cannot appreciate the art.
Those people don't know the truth. But we do!
Rappers have learned to create music using their own instruments, and in their own way. The craft has evolved quite a bit over the years, as has the
equipment, but the method of sampling music, laying down a beat, looping an instrumental, laying down some bass, effects, etc (I am NOT a producer
just a big fan of the craft, so forgive me if I am missing anything or just being ignorant) remains largely the same.
There are way too many great instrumentals for me to pick a favorite, but I do know that this instrumental from the Cunninlynguists' album A Piece of
Strange is among the instrumentals that I can't get enough of. It is so soulful. I like the instrumental way better than the finished song (Tonedeff
is not my fav). Check it out!
The Gates
So I really like to figure out the songs that rappers sampled. If I don't know it myself, I try to hunt it down and find the original song. I've
found a lot of gems (many 70s) like that! Here are the samples used for The Gates. Pure music gold.
This one is so soulful:
Has anyone seen the show Rhythm Roulette? It is such a good way to watch the process of producing a hip hop beat. This episode with Just Blaze is
like watching a symphony being made. Enjoy ATS! Please share some of your favorite instrumentals or samples here!
