Anyone know what the activity was like beforehand?
Hopefully something this size is not actually leading up to a bigger quake...

If there is significant crustal displacement, I would think a set of waves could be propogated dispite the depth.

I hope not, but it iis certainly worth watching. Good OP. A flag for being on the ball with this.

You think strong earthquakes are unusual in the region?
Have you looked into the matter much?

Downgraded to 7.9 there is nothing to report regarding a Tsunami, it was under land, Bougainville Island
so say GDACS, the place where I get those tsunami animations

Summary
Current impact estimate:
The earthquake was not tsunamogenic. No calculations were performed.
Green alert in Papua New Guinea on 22/01/2017 04:30:23 UTC
142212 people within 100km
Magnitude 7.9M, Depth:136km

There was a 6.5 yesterday further south just off San Cristobal Island, which did produce a 0.1m high local tsunami.
This seems to be a common thing in the Solomon Is, has happened three times in the last couple of years, the earthquakes swing back and forth between these two islands (or at least around each set of islands) for a week or two, 6s and 7's with 5s thrown in as aftershocks.

Yeah that was a story of epic survival under extreme circumstances
I remember everyone around here thought he had drowned, hundred of residents going about their daily lives driving back and forth along Centennial Hwy back and forth to work and he was floating back and forth along the coast.
