In this post, I'll only be discussing the watered-down versions of the law of attraction and hoʻoponopono that have been sold to the new age community. I realize there are different variations, but I only want to compare the most common beliefs about these things here. First, I'll define what I'll be discussing in this thread:

Hoʻoponopono (ho-o-pono-pono) is an ancient Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness.

LINK

If you read the link above, you'll see that it's a complicated process. But, the complicated process isn't being sold the to masses. The following is a synopsis of how it's being sold the masses:

There are four simple steps to this method, and the order is not that important. Repentance, Forgiveness, Gratitude and Love are the only forces at work – but these forces have amazing power.

The best part of the updated version of Ho’oponopono is you can do it yourself, you don’t need anyone else to be there, you don’t need anyone to hear you. You can “say” the words in your head. The power is in the feeling and in the willingness of the Universe to forgive and love.

Step 1: Repentance – I’M SORRY
As I mention above, you are responsible for everything in your mind, even if it seems to be “out there.” Once you realize that, it’s very natural to feel sorry. I know I sure do. If I hear of a tornado, I am so full of remorse that something in my consciousness has created that idea. I’m so very sorry that someone I know has a broken bone that I realize I have caused.

This realization can be painful, and you will likely resist accepting responsibility for the “out there” kind of problems until you start to practice this method on your more obvious “in here” problems and see results.

So choose something that you already know you’ve caused for yourself? Over-weight? Addicted to nicotine, alcohol or some other substance? Do you have anger issues? Health problems? Start there and say you’re sorry. That’s the whole step: I’M SORRY. Although I think it is more powerful if you say it more clearly: “I realize that I am responsible for the (issue) in my life and I feel terrible remorse that something in my consciousness has caused this.”

Step 2: Ask Forgiveness – PLEASE FORGIVE ME
Don’t worry about who you’re asking. Just ask! PLEASE FORGIVE ME. Say it over and over. Mean it. Remember your remorse from step 1 as you ask to be forgiven.

Step 3: Gratitude – THANK YOU
Say “THANK YOU” – again it doesn’t really matter who or what you’re thanking. Thank your body for all it does for you. Thank yourself for being the best you can be. Thank God. Thank the Universe. Thank whatever it was that just forgave you. Just keep saying THANK YOU.

Step 4: Love – I LOVE YOU
This can also be step 1. Say I LOVE YOU. Say it to your body, say it to God. Say I LOVE YOU to the air you breathe, to the house that shelters you. Say I LOVE YOU to your challenges. Say it over and over. Mean it. Feel it. There is nothing as powerful as Love.

That’s it. The whole practice in a nutshell. Simple and amazingly effective.

I would imagine everyone on this forum knows about the mainstream version of the law of attraction:

Much has been said about the law of attraction. This bible verse from Mathew 7:7 sums it up nicely. “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”

The basic theory is that you ask specifically for what you want, you believe wholeheartedly that it will happen and then you receive what it is you asked for.

I spoke to someone recently who claimed to believe completely in hoʻoponopono but also claimed to have evolved past the law of attraction. I was stunned that this person couldn't see how asinine their position was (considering that they were talking about the mainstream versions of the belief systems explained above).

How can anyone not see that the watered-down versions of the law of attraction and hoʻoponopono described above are essentially the same?

1. Pray

2. Believe your prayer will be answered

3. Accept the blessings from the prayer

How are the belief systems different?

Here's my conclusion:

Some very unscrupulous people have found a way to make millions of dollars by saying the same thing in different ways:

Pray and your prayers will be answered!

It sounds to me like the same old lie that organized religion has been selling for thousands of years.

where exactly did you do ur research on law of attraction ? law of attraction is only a small piece of a bigger picture even if not benefiting you as much as they say it clearly sets a positive vibe for ur mind and body which in itself gives huge proven benefits. Never once have i stumbled across a link to the law of attraction and "god".

Just my 2 cents

One is spiritual and the other is materialistic, one is love and the other is desire. One is healing and liberating, the other is or can easily become ego centered. Having said that, anything can become ego centered if one so desires.a reply to: Profusion

Hoʻoponopono isnt that complicated.

All you have to do is to chant or silently repeat "I'M Sorry, Please Forgive me, Thank You, I Love You" or Apply these words to every circumstance you find unpleasant or disturbing.

The only thing to do is, to really mean the meaning of the words. And to repeat them over and over again.

i have never heard of Hoʻoponopono however i am very familiar with the LOA. it was initially introduced to it VIA the secret a number of years ago like many other people out there...

but upon further research and digging deeper its just scratches the surface of some very fundamental aspects of how our universe operates.

what i have found amazing is that you can tie so many of the ideas together with various religions ying and yang positive and negative energy. these are all concepts expressed in different ways all over the world but have a common similarity.

its all one in the same

I'm far from new age.

The LOA worked for me.

I dare not try it again - I get the feeling I benefited and others lost, to sort of offset the scales.
