I get tired of hearing the news media talking heads saying that AR-15's are designed to kill. AR-15's and the like AND military rounds in general are designed to wound NOT kill. Wounding an enemy soldier takes more soldiers off the battlefield than killing enemy soldiers. These kinds of weapons are designed to wound. I don't understand why no one calls them on this more often.

Not only that, but the .223/5.56 is a varmint round, usually used for long range hunting of gophers and pests.

If they are not designed to kill why do they have a killing projectile as opposed to say.... feathers?

This isn't helping the gun lobby.

If that's true, why have AR-15's become popular hunting rifles?

Is that why every AR 15 I've seen at WalMart comes with a free box of bandaids?

Seriously?
You could put an eye out if you're not careful.

That's true, it's the medical attention and related manpower / cost that is most effective in inflicting damage to the enemy's resources.

I used to put .223 rounds through 1/2 inch of 4140 steel with my Valmet M76. That round can kill the sh!t out of someone, pronto.

IMO, it's still a lethal weapon.....

A lethal weapon means a deadly weapon. Any firearm, device, instrument, material, or any other substance that is capable of producing great bodily harm or death from the manner it is used or intended to be used, may be referred to as a lethal weapon. A gun, sword, knife, pistol, or the like, is a lethal weapon, as a matter of law, when used within striking distance from the person assaulted.

The use of lethal weapon supports finding of second-degree murder, however, its use is not of itself sufficient to support first-degree murder conviction in absence of evidentiary circumstances surrounding killing from which logical inference may be drawn as to premeditation and deliberation. [People v Hoffmeister (1975) 394 Mich 155, 229 NW2d 305]. However, the use of lethal weapon supports inference of intent to kill. [People v Ray (1974) 56 Mich App 610, 224 NW2d 735].

as opposed to a non-lethal (less-than-lethal) weapon.

THAT was their bright idea, a wound is meant instead of a lethal shot when using the 5.56 round( Little girlie boys)
The lighter round would tumble and remain inside the victim instead of relying on hydrostatic shock from a round passing through.
Needless to say YES they kill all the time but bear in mind we are taking about a .23 caliber bullet here.

AR rifles have grown immensely in popularity, and with good reason. These light-recoiling, durable semiautos make sense not only for military and law enforcement applications, but also for self-defense, competition and target shooting. ARs also make excellent hunting rifles, and there are a growing number of hunters who rely on their ARs to put meat in the freezer.

Well, the paintball versions aren't designed to kill. That's true.
The ones that use bullets...

So, 00018GE do you want to be the guinea pig?
Don't worry it will just be a flesh wound.

AR-15's are also excellent for cracking open walnuts and Brazil nuts.

The "design to kill" aspect is where you place the bullet.

The user designs a scenario and reacts accordingly.

All guns can be part of that design.

I think the effectiveness of the AR15
as a lethal weapon has recently been
verified in Orlando .

Your premise is somewhat flawed ,
and has set my meter off ....

Gun owners ,the NRA is small potatoes to many knuckle draggers,WE aren't all hunters.
We are armed for other reasons.

In the hands of a boy who couldn't use it correctly yes he killed a few.
But the above is correct...MILITARY science being what it was in the 70s they were ACTUALLY stupid enough to believe that.
However Commies and tangos leave wounded so...
