It's amazing how even the same song can sound radically different when performed under different conditions. Whether it's a different tempo by separate artists, an acoustic arrangement by the same artist or somewhere in between, a new perspective on a song that is in the same musical key and lyrical arrangement as the original can be experienced.

One song I thought was worthy of mentioning was Layla played by the same guitarist (Eric Clapton). I happened to have heard the acoustic version first, unaware until recently that there was a faster rock version.

The first video is Clapton performing the song as part of Derek and the Dominos band.

The second video is of Clapton performing a slower, acoustic version of the song as a solo artist.

Which do you prefer? I personally think the acoustic one has a better feel to it, but I love the guitar riff of the first version.

Do you have a song that has strong original and alternate versions you would like to share?

Here is the original by British Band " Tears For Fears "

And the remake by American Gary Jules.

They are both good in there own way.

Oh, yes!
I love Gary Jules' version, ever since I first heard it in Donnie Darko. It's beautiful.

I like Clapton's acoustic version better and may be why I like the Bluegrass version of Elton John's Rocketman better as well .
But both versions are great ...imo

Ice Ice Baby "borrowed" the music from Under Pressure by Queen/David Bowie.

I'm an old hippy but I gotta agree. Their version is raw with emotion. Which matches the subject matter so much better.

True!

Apparently Al Jourgensen insisted they do that cover purely in an attempt to annoy Paul Barker. Lol

I miss them.

They lived in Horseshoe Bay when I was in high school. It was about 25 miles from my town. The parties were not of this world from everything I heard. Then they got run out of town when somebody od'd. Then off to Hell Paso.

Still, a very under appreciated Texas band.

Just found this cover of Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun. I thought I'd throw it in here because I thought it was amazing.

New to the off-topic forums, and this is my first post here. Nice thread!

My choice for a cover which exceeds the quality of a high quality original, would be The Milk Carton Kids' version of 'Wish you were here', as being better than the original, of course by Pink Floyd.

I love both tbh, but the MCK version just seems more elegant...

I was plugging around at Metallica and can't believe I forgot this one.
Not sure I have a preference, I like them both for different reasons.

Metallica's version:

If I could only listen to one ever again, I wouldn't be able to choose!
