Chirac warns Iran to stick to nuclear pledge

French President Jacques Chirac warned Iran to stick to its pledge to European powers to suspend nuclear activities, saying that adherence would give it access to legitimate technology.
"In terms of the fight against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, Iran's case show the path to take," he told an annual New Year's meeting of foreign ambassadors in Paris.

"Countries which respect their international obligations in terms on non-proliferation and show proof of the peaceful nature of their activities should be able to benefit from technologies that are allowed under international rules," he said."

Iran must have missed there first "payment" to France. Chirac thought he may have found another "oil-for-food" source of funding.

He must really be missing his best buddy Saddam right now.

Ok to be realistic here, how in gods green earth can Irans adhereance be confirmed? Not to brand a people as a whole, but the middle eastern leaders pretty much as a whole have an extensive track record of falsifications, to put it lightly.

Some people need very little to take the moral highground. In fact they don't even need common sense. Instead they can just turn a man into a villian and suppose that their nation is doing much more.

The US already does have sanctions on Iran, US oil-companies cannot work in Iran. The current push by the US for expanding the sanctions on the initiative of the Security Council is an attempt to also block foreign competition from working there.

Iran has Bilaterally signed a temporary agreement with Great Britain, France and Germany to cease uranium enrichment. The IAEA has thus far stated that Iran is following the agreement.

I apologise for undermining what the US is doing..... it's attempting to have sanctions placed which are in its own economic interests. What every nation would (or should) do. Europe see's this and is acting in its own interests, namely by placing uranium enrichment "sanctions", whilst leaving the door open for its companies. It's called diplomacy.

What is France going to do if they don't. Stop selling cheese to them? They will probably need to be dealt with by the U.S. using pinpoint airstrikes on their facilities.

Why put France in the middle of this? Pretty much every single country, including China, Russia, Germany and Britain have been against sanctions.

France would obviously do what's in its national interests. I thought that would be obvious to all.

Yeah, so the cheese sales will continue. Ignore the problem and demonize any country (especially the U.S.) that actually wants to solve the problem.
