Deep Impact Launch Window Open Jan 12 - Closes Jan 28

"Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jan 04, 2005
In the movie "Deep Impact," NASA astronauts try to prevent a comet from hitting Earth. When the mission fails, as a last desperate act they fly their spacecraft into the comet, blowing it to smithereens."

=

"When the Deep Impact spacecraft approaches Temple 1 on July 4, 2005, it will release a smaller spacecraft designed to impact the comet. This impactor spacecraft is equipped with a camera that will take pictures as it approaches the comet's surface. The primary part of the spacecraft that will hit the comet is a copper disc weighing over 300 pounds."

=

"The impact spacecraft will fly head-on into the comet at 23,000 mph. According to A'Hearn, some scientists think the impact could fracture the comet into several pieces, while others believe the impact will merely compress the cometary materials."

NASA Lunacy

Does anyone see a proble here. Not even NASA can have perfect data on the orbits of all bodies surrounding earth. This mission could provide a specific "change" that could bring a series of impacts in the very near future as predicted in both the Bible Codes and Revelations itself.

Look at the physics here 300 pound mass traveling at 23,000 mph hitting an object of "unknown" mass. Do you trust NASA to be 100% correct here?

The chances of knocking the comet into an Earth collision course are much smaller than a random asteroid/comet hitting us without warning.

This basicly boils down messing around with orbits far away from earth when there are millions of other rocks that come much closer to earth already.

Or alternativly (since this is a conspiracy board), they are trying to STOP the comet from hitting Earth and just haven't said anything because it would cause mass panic.

Of the billion of "things" that orbit through our small solar system are we so "confident" that we can go around changing the orbits of anything and specifically know the "impact". All puns intended.

You do point out something though, there are "copper" based explosives.

If its solid, we are fine. If its porus and just held together by its own forces, like a hand full of pebbles, That thing will break into hundreds of pieces. I think they need to hold off on this little experiment untill they can learn more about the composition of this big a$$ rock.

The key word here is IF? Too many unknowns............

If its solid, we'll alter its orbit of the sun. If its very porus like you say then its not a threat at all, it would break up and burn up in the atmosphere if it hit earth.

As for copper based explosives, I actually used to work in metalic explosives research... At the weight they gave for the collision vehicle, if made of the right materials, it could make a nuclear weapon look weak.

All that being said... I see no problem altering comets paths. We change things around us all the time. Drilling a new well for your house could cause a sink hole to devour half your town. Actually, Removing ground water run a higher risk of death that messing around with a comet in a far off orbit.

People do a LOT of things that could end the world, messing around with a comet is about a low a risk as you could want.

Here are some past fears that people had...

First atomic bomb burning off the atmosphere.

Heavy Particle Experiments creating a black hole that swallows the earth.

Fussion experiments that light the planet on fire.

All had the potential to end it all, but they didn't, and this probably won't either.

Every time you get in a car you run a high risk of death or serious injury. On the road you are surrounded by unknowns in the form of weather, other drivers, and road quality.

Every time you take a bath/shower you are surrounded by unknown surface condition that could be slippery and end your life.

You risk your own life a trillion fold over the risk of messing around with an object millions of miles away.

What if the explorers of the 14th century were told not to sail the seas for fear they would just anger god and cause their doom?

It fear of the unknown even with minimal risk. Just fear. Be more affraid about the wars here on earth and what people around you are doing.

This is how we advance our knowledge of the universe.

This particular comet was "lost" for a number of years after it was "discovered" in 1867. It was "recovered" several years later. They know very little about this comet. Here is a link that shows its orbit.

deepimpact.umd.edu...

They are talking about a very large impact on this thing.

Everytime I read about this I feel like its going up there to prevent an impact. They did this not too long ago too.. with that aerogel stuff and the dust .. the crash .. yeah.

Could the first one.. the attempt to get the dust.. have just been a test run? Then this second one an attempt to destroy whatever the hell is bothering them so much?

And then of course the real paranoid thoughts start up.. "When were those dates that the AB hoaxer gave off? What if the tsunami was caused by a comet?"

Then the gov enacts some doomsday legislation.

Then I can't sleep and I'm up till 3am posting on conspiracy message boards.

Stark "Fear... abject fear"
Chianna "Fear of what?"
Stark "Their fear extends to them not wanting to talk about their fear."

What if this experiment knocks the comet into a new trajectory with another inhabited planet, then this planet see's this as an act of war?
Then we get invaded or something?
You never know what the consequences might be. Plus you might have greenpeace protesting that nasa is wrecking the environment of space.
You never can tell with left wing fundamentalism.

If we to blow up a comet or an asteriod that was on a collision course with earth, would'nt that just make matters worse by in essence making many smaller pieces that would increase the odds of more numerous strikes?

what frustrates me is, they already have the missle......now they're telling us their doing it!!

we all live here, maybe they should call for a vote or somthing first?

comets sevre a purpouse as with oil water and air, we keep interupting its going to slap us in the face!
