Kofi Annan, the embattled Secretary General of the UN, was recently given stern warnings by a group of friends and allies in a secret meeting that was held in a New York apartment. During the meeting, which, though the guest list was secret, is known to have involved top-level Clinton adminsitartion officials, Annan was warned that apparently anti-American stance his office had taken in recent months was doomed to result in the destruction of the UN. The membership of this secret meeting advised him to replace several important staffers who had expressed anti-american sentiments and to acknowledge the necessity of the US in UN affairs:

its nice to know that mud slinging may be the way of the dodo,

if more political figures share their common positivity, maybe we can make the world a better place.

Since when are officials chided for freedom of speech and expression? Anti-American rhetoric you say? While this country wages illegal wars, Mr. Annan is chided? Hypocrisy.

Clinton? The same man who sold arms to Turkey while the killed Kurds; the same man who knew of Rawanda and decided not to do anything; the same man who sent refugees back to Haiti and broke the U.D....

Read the article. Annan's own friends think that he blew it by letting his staff repeatedly sabotage US efforts. Though I do think that Annan made some major mistakes... I think that it should be noted that Annan's own allies, as indicated by this article, think that he was too anti-American.

Kofi Anan is a corrupt, ineffectual leader.

The UN has only ever been moderately successful - at best - in it's life. If it is to survive it must be completely overhauled.

The UN is in serious risk of completely collapsing.

Kofi Anan is part of the problem: He must go,

The meeting referred to in this article and others is essentially an
Intervention!

Friends of Kofi's are trying to rally him to get his cranium extracted and get something done to save his reputation and the EXISTANCE of the UN.

The UN must change or die....Regardless of what happens, Kofi needs to go!

Black Flag

It's a good idea, when using caps, to check the spelling multiple times, so you don't, yaknow, give the wrong impression about, well, yaknow, your whole point's validity.

The UN charter much like the a countries consitution cannot be changed just to suit certain parties at any point in time, at least not without the support of the majority of members. He believed that in the case of Iraq the UN charter was not abided by (which is why he may seem anti-US), whether you agree with him or not he certainly has a right to an opinion as do others in the UN. If he or others are to be removed it should be by the normal process and scare tactics should not be used to influence this change.

The charter only allows the use of force for self-defense and actions taken "to maintain or restore international peace and security"

In only three out of 26 shooting wars involving U.N. member nations has use of force been authorized by the United Nations -- the Korean War, the 1991 Gulf War and the 2001 conflict in Afghanistan, according to the council.

The UN is a reactive body of beurocrats. They can only cry and point fingers. Koffi should be put on trial for crimes against humanity right beside his business partner "Saddam". Then the UN should move to another planet. Venus works for me.....

Acknowledge the necessity of the US in UN affairs? What to demonstrate that the rule of law applys to all EXCEPT the US?

The US is constantly opposing the UN and its resolutions, so please don't insult the UN by suggesting it needs its most uncooperative member.

Richard Holbrook wants to be a "shadow" secretary of state; he and the group advising Kofi are the old left foggy bottom crowd in search of relevance.

It was a secret meeting? Then how does New York Times know what happened at the meeting?
