Watchdog Says Report of 10,000 Toddlers on ADHD Drugs Tip of the Iceberg — 274,000 0-1 Year Olds and 370,000 Toddlers Prescribed Psychiatric Drugs

Mental health watchdog Citizens Commission on Human Rights says a new report issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on the 10,000 toddlers being prescribed ADHD drugs, is only the tip of the iceberg regarding children being prescribed psychiatric drugs in the U.S. According to IMS health, more than 274,000 0-1 year olds are being prescribed psychiatric drugs and a staggering 370,000 toddlers.

Here's how the numbers break down for the 0 to 1-year-olds... the babies:

-- 249,669 on anti-anxiety drugs (such as Xanax, Klonopin, and Ativan)
-- 26,406 on antidepressants (such as Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil)
-- 1,422 on ADHD drugs (such as Ritalin, Adderall, and Concerta)
-- 654 on antipsychotics (such as Risperdal, Seroquel, and Zyprexa)

Here's how the numbers break down for the toddlers:

-- 318,997 on anti-anxiety drugs
-- 46,102 on antidepressants
-- 10,000 on ADHD drugs
-- 3,760 on antipsychotics

And here's how the numbers break down for all age groups/drugs:

-- The total number of 0-5 year olds on psychiatric drugs is 1,080,168.
-- The number of 6-12 year olds on psychiatric drugs is 4,130,340.
-- The number of 13-17 year olds taking psychiatric drugs is 3,617,593.

But these kids must need these drugs right? There must have been extensive diagnostic testing performed to determine these kids must have these drugs, right? Nope:

The above are stunning data and, yet, the most egregious element of the ever-increasing number of America's children being prescribed psychiatric drugs, is that the diagnosis needed in order to have the drugs prescribed, is subjective—there is no medical test to support or validate even one psychiatric diagnosis. As Allen Frances, a psychiatrist and former DSM-IV Task Force Chairman, stated, "There are no objective tests in psychiatry—no X-ray, laboratory or exam finding that says definitively that someone does or does not have a mental disorder. There is no definition of mental disorder. It's bull…. I mean you just can't define it."

Okay, okay... at least we know that these drugs are safe and effective and won't hurt our kids, right? Wrong. Many -- perhaps MOST -- of these drugs have never been tested on children and/or approved for children. For example:

ADHD drugs also have serious side effects such as agitation, mania, aggressive or hostile behavior, seizures, hallucinations, and even sudden death, according to the National Institutes of Health. And the Food and Drug Administration still mandates that all labels for ADHD stimulants state "Long-term effects of amphetamines in children have not been well established."

What could possibly go wrong??? Let's read that quote above again: "...serious side effects such as agitation, mania, aggressive or hostile behavior, seizures, hallucinations, and even sudden death, according to the National Institutes of Health." How many recent school shooters and other mass murderers have been on these drugs again??? Oh... that's right... ALL OF THEM. Hmmmmm.....

And then we have this too:

As far as antipsychotics, antianxiety drugs and antidepressants, the FDA and international drug regulatory agencies cite side effects including, but not limited to, psychosis, mania, suicidal ideation, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and even sudden death.

There might be valid individual circumstances in which such drugs are appropriate for children... but I'm far more concerned with the mental health of those who think psychiatric medications with so many known adverse effects is in any way acceptable for children! What the hell are these people thinking???

If its not clear all the medications being dolled out and other GMOs are wreaking havok on the populace I dunno what is.....

We sit around and fight each other about race, religion, and partisan politics

While the pharmaceutical , and GMO food companies KILL US OFF, and breed disorders into our populace......

When will the true enemy be fought against

All those drugs are probably having disastrous effects on the developing brain.

No wonder the u.s has so many mass shootings.

Unfortunately this is the result of a privatised medical system where profit takes precedence over everything else,so unless something changes this kind of thing will continue.

Very sad.

Why don't they just use coffee in the bottles. Screw phattening up BigPharma, support folgers instead.

Gotta add I find it curious the teens use less pharma than the tweens. I'm thinking the kids drop that ridilin for meth, and antidepressants for alcohol.

See look here:

Coffee Todlers

Guess some parents have better sense than others; thimble of brandy, right? Beats the DXM cough syrup you know they're chugging behind your back.

I'm seeing all this pretty much the same way.... What I don't understand is why so many people don't see it!

(Of course, plenty of folks -- especially "experts" -- do see it, but their greed and avarice takes precedence over children's health and safety.)

This is pretty bleak. What will we see over the next 39 years as a result of these prescriptions?

I was told I was adhd when I was a kid, my "treatment" was essentially to play more. I had one doctor try to put me on meds, took them for a couple days. I was a zombie, my mom stopped giving them to me. Turned out fine.

Hey! I resemble that remark!!!

I used to bribe my daughter with coffee to get her to school on time... it worked! At first I felt guilty. Then I realized it was helping her -- and a couple teachers even commented on her increased alertness and participation in class.

And brandy is amazing stuff... a key ingredient in my hot toddies. Which reminds me I need to pick some up...

A lot of people don't seem very interested in anything that isn't popularised by the msm or doesn't involve celebrities.

The masses need to wake up so that this sort of thing doesn't happen, putting toddlers and young children on these kinds of drugs is wrong on every level, god knows what its doing to their brains.

Perhaps this happens less in countries which have "socialised medicine" (an indirect benefit).
When the state is picking up the bill for medication, the state is too mean to encourage over-prescription.

Scary, ain't it?

Yeah Mom!!!

A couple people thought my son was autistic because he didn't speak until well after his 3rd birthday. I talked to his pediatrician about it, but I wasn't especially worried because he was functioning and learning and playing just fine, and his doctor wasn't worried about it either. I just figured he was stubborn and ornery (he still is!). When he did start talking, he spoke in complete sentences with perfect pronunciation. The doctor and I had a good laugh together. Today, like you, he's a grown man and doing just fine.

How many kids weren't as lucky as you and my son? How many adults having problems today because of these drugs would have turned out just fine without them? This is what scares me. What are we doing to our children???

Yup, that's exactly what it is... and just in case that blind faith isn't enough, they're doing their damnedest to take away our simple -- but crucial -- natural right to say "no" any and every way they can.

All of those mass shooters/murderers were not on medication, people need to stop making excuses for their disturbed behavior.

Definitely. But I'm starting to realize there's a sub-group that's just playing dumb, or willfully ignorant, because one way or another they feel they are benefiting from whatever bad behavior, and they know they can't justify it, but neither do they want it to stop, so they just play dumb. Unless, like me, you push the issue, and they blow up in your face and reveal they know far more than they pretend to know. And I'm finding it very very disturbing.

The masses need to wake up so that this sort of thing doesn't happen, putting toddlers and small children on these kinds of drugs is wrong on every level, god knows what its doing to their brains.

I guess that's why we're here, eh? We can keep asking the hard questions and pointing out the hard truths. Hopefully we learn and get schooled ourselves along the way too. Knowledge is power and the pen is mightier than the sword... that's what I keep telling myself anyway

I've read otherwise many times, even lists of each shooter and the meds he was on. If you have better information you want to share, I'd appreciate it -- I'm sure others would as well.

It's not about making excuses, it's about saving lives. If these mind-altering drugs are altering minds in ways that makes them kill others, then we can stop it. To do otherwise is basically supporting murderers and their murdering sprees. In other words, it makes us all cold blooded killers.

That is so GD SIIIICK!!!!! People don't want to have babies anymore, they want little baby dolls. Don't have the time or energy to deal with a baby that is cranky, fussy, makes too much noise, crawls around too much, or walks too early. Maybe they should just buy 'Baby Alive' doll so they pretend to be real parents. It will be interesting to see the effects from these young ones on drugs so early in about 20 or so years and other countries that still wanted living breathing normal acting babies. It's a proven fact that children put on Ritalin have a much higher rate of drug use.

I just want to puke. This literally breaks my heart.

Thank you! I have wondered the same thing, and I believe you're right, but I've been looking at it from another angle.

In a country with socialized medicine, the mission or purpose is to provide health care, and money is a tool to do so. In this mess we call a healthcare system, it's basically reversed: the purpose is to make money, and providing health care is a tool to do that... as are our bought-and-paid-for congress critters -- who would sell our souls to the highest bidder if they could -- who can use the law and regs and media to benefit the few at the expense of the money. And money is just part of the "cost" for us. People are hurting. People are being hurt. People are dying.

Oh, I see.

So none of the blame rests on mommy or daddy who, more often than not, just want to do everything except parent little Johnny or Suzy?

It is heart wrenching. I've had a lump in my throat since I read it. I just cannot fathom how anyone can think this is a good idea when it screams child abuse to me. It hurts my heart.

Parents are not the only problem, but they are the first and primary line of defense for their kids, so parents must be a big part of the solution. But I've heard the amount of pressure parents are under to put their kids on these drugs from doctors and teachers and counselors is crazy. That's not even including what they hear from friends and family -- especially those with a medical background! And just like you said, too often because it benefits them to have a little zombie child, not for the child's real benefit.

But first people have to understand it's a problem... and remember they can say "no."
