Yeah, I don't get the criticisms of the Church in that regard. It's just history and tradition - and tradition is slow to change. And some of it I personally wouldn't want to change. It's just one superficial thing, the least important aspect of Papal traditions.

True. Jesus loves us all and no matter your imperfections he will forgive you if you simply ask and put your faith in him. His warm embrace is open to anyone and any who genuinely accept it can become a better person.

I would say it is a sign of the times. Great spiritual leaders need to speak. Everything is out of balance. The scales tipping toward war, famine, drought, poverty in our cities. Vote out war hawks and budget cutters.

It's nice to see a Christian who not only DOESN'T deny science, but actively promotes it.

I think the vast majority of Christians believe in science. At least that's the case in the UK where things like creationism are not taught as fact and the Church of England announced some time ago that it was pants.

I think you are right for the most part, but the pope is in the US right now, and many Christians here don't believe in science (mostly because the media told them not).

I did try not to use all inclusive language in my OP so that no one can misconstrue my words and say that I'm stereotyping all Christians.

A dig at climate change skeptics? The climate is changing but not as bad as advertised so to speak. The Pope if he want sto lead on this needs to insist the vatican go off grid and go green. Also Go to china and india and speak out on their polluting ways. This pope i suspect is too believing in scientist who do nto have the well being of anyone but themselves at heart. IF scientist belive in this so much they should show us by standing up and protest. tie yourselves to power plants. Otherwise it looks liek they are saying do as i say not as i do. Its arrogant looking.

today the meeting of two of the prototypes for the unholy Trinity (Pope Francis & Hussein Obama) met on the WH lawn

but the third member of any future unholy Trinity will not make his debut until after the Blood Moon/super moon over Jerusalem on 28 September this year...and the pits/portals/ openings to the abyss are preparing for the Devil to exit his temporary prison in the wastelands we know as Siberia (see the link below)

see this reference source: www.thebigwobble.org...

pay particular attention to this statement

...The Tunguska event which some Bible scholars quietly assume was the moment Satan was thrown down to earth occurred near the Stony Tunguska River, in what is now Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, on the morning of June 30, 1908.

the stage is being set up for Two persons to emerge from the land & the sea to perform the roles of False Prophet and the Anti-Christ who receives a fatal head wound only to miraculously survives (because Satan indwells the corpse)

and all this can only happen after the 4th Pale Horse & Horseman called Death followed by Hades, are released from the Abyss created in the aftermath of the 1908 Tunguska event of Satan being imprisoned on/in the Earth

I like the first comment on the article at the bottom of the page... that poster and I think alike...

ON day 266 of the year, the 266th Pope visits the head of Mystery Babylon (President Obama) 5 days before the 4th horse/horseman is released on 28 Sept. 2015 which releases Death and Hades on 1/4th of the world community (or somewhere near 40 countries to be under Jihad/Anarchist/Terrorism attacks almost immediately)

It is all ramping up fast to a time of Tribulation which the occult events of Sept. 2015 are portending...be aware

Not related to Francis, but China is already starting to move into the 21st century.

China climate change plan unveiled

The statement, released following a meeting in Paris between Li and French President Francois Hollande, said China aimed to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP by 60-65% by 2030, from 2005 levels.

The carbon intensity target builds on a previous plan to cut carbon intensity by 40-45% by 2020.

China also aimed to increase the share of non-fossil fuels in its primary energy consumption to about 20% by 2030, the statement added.

Beijing previously set a goal of getting around 15% of its energy from clean sources by 2020.

Yes -- thank you! That is exactly what I meant. So much of what we focus on, both as Christians and as non-Christians looking in -- is so superficial and petty that I want to cry. Jesus tried so hard to tell us that, but we keep missing the forest for the trees.

I'm sooo glad I'm not the only one who sees it. It gives me hope and warm fuzzies all over -- so thank you!

Well thats good. I want more reactors myself to lower coal usage. IF th egovernment will get on it and just release the fusion reactors(we know you have working ones in black storage DARPA) And undercut the power industry maybe things will get better. Still till they do regular reactors work well enough. Reducing coal will not be so bad to th e economy, done gradually and at the same time as reactor use goes up.

So ironic that those who despise Christianity, and are very vocal about it every chance they get, love this pope.

What did Jesus have to say about it?

John 15:18,19
18"If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. 19"If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.…

Mathew 10:22
22"You will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved.

We were warned to not be deceived.

Mathew 24:4-13
4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.

5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.

10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
.

When the atheists, new agers and pagans start praising a Christian leader it should set off HUGE red flags to followers of Jesus.

The pope.....really needs to stay out of political things. The catholic church is the reason why we have so many issues as it is. Its why most left england and yet here we go again a pope trying to tell everyone what to do. Until he renounces all wealth and the vatican dissolves as a state and spreads its wealth to the poor and needy i agree its just words.

The Pope is the head of the nation state that is the Vatican. Like it or not he is a political figure.

I did not know either until I heard that filmmaker of 'Selma' had to rewrite speeches just to comply and avoid fees that Dr. Kings estate wanted?! Their decision not to provide license for movie that shows Dr. Kings life imho is very counterproductive regarding Dr. King's words and message...

Exactly!
The basis of Catholicism was the merger of paganism with a bastardized version of Christianity. The creation of Catholicism was for control of the masses rather than an attempt to spread the Gospel.

All of the symbolism and rituals in the RCC are direct descendants of paganism and goes directly against what is taught in the Bible.

For anyone interested in the truth about Christianity, from the fall of man in Eden up to the present day, The Fuel Project has an excellent video series called "know your enemy" on youtube.

Besides this being a No True Scotsman fallacy, if you go by the criteria you just provided above then no one is a true Christian. Because most modern Christianity is based or modifies Catholic tenants.

So you are concerned that there now exists a Pope that may lead people back to Christianity that left it because they became disillusioned with the faith and who is acting like Christians are supposed to act, and you think that is a sign of the end times?

LOL! To some Christians, anything is a sign of the end times. Hey look! A cat jumped off a roof and didn't land feet down! That had to have been written down in bible prophecy! The end is near!

Pope Francis quoted from Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech.

Makes me wonder if he had to pay license to Dr. King's estate to use part of speech or in end they might sue him...

en.wikipedia.org...

www.poynter.org...

The only legal way to reproduce King’s work — at least until it enters the public domain in 2038 — is to pay for a licensing fee, rates for which vary. (Individuals visiting the King Center can buy a recording of the “I have a dream” speech for $20. Licenses for media outlets run into the thousands.)

That is terrible.

Is that what Dr. King would have wanted?

Just terrible.

RE: the OP....

...while I like a lot of what this pope says, I can't help but be struck by the strangeness of the vibe in his words. I can't help but think about how strongly John Paul opposed Socialism, and how much Francis seems to embrace it.
