Our prison system has become an advanced school on criminal activity - you go in with a minor possession charge, you get out (with a record, so few job opportunities) with a degree in drug dealing/burglary/whatever criminal vocation you can learn from the clique you choose to associate with. There is a reason the DOC keeps close records on gang affiliations and prisoner associations - because those affiliations often become relevant after the prisoner is released. There are also very good reasons why re-offending rates are so high - and it has nothing to do with the criminal disposition of the US population.

Dunno where those 'figures' are coming from but less than 1% of the US population is in prison.

But again if there is blame to be assigned that goes to politicians, and lawmakers.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), 2,266,800 adults were incarcerated in U.S. federal and state prisons, and county jails at year-end 2011 – about 0.94% of adults in the U.S. resident population

en.wikipedia.org...

Last time I checked the US population is over 330 million.

22% of the people imprisoned on are in the US. Total global prison population of 9 million and of that 2.2 million are the US. I did not mention any thing about the percent of the US population. Although we do have the second highest rate of that in the world.

Yeah it is embarrassing.

Because from country to country how, and why people end up in prison are not the same in any one country.

Dunno some people are ignoring that.

For them all to be comparable they would have to be the EXACT same.

That's part of the problem as to why we have such a high number of the worlds prisoners. We lock people up for minor offenses that are legal in most areas of the world or carry nothing more than a fine as a penalty. Furthermore, out of the prison population 97% for federal and 94% for state were never even found guilty in a court of law and are instead there as a result of a plea bargain.

So not only are we sending people to prison for minor crimes that they shouldn't be locked away for, but we're not even giving them due process when we do so.

The current US prison population is comparable to the population of the Gulags under Stalin.

We also execute plenty of prisoners before the trial, have you looked in the posse comitatus forum? Every single day cops kill alleged criminals in order to save the system from having to put them in and out of prison for the next several decades.

yes to many laws to many people locked up for rong reasons, it is really a police state and just getting alot worse!!

You can expect that to happen when putting people into prison has become a profit making business. This is why our prison system needs to be overhauled and the profit needs to be taken out of it.

Good question for Bobby Jindal? After all he thinks he is presidential material?

Louisiana is the world's prison capital. The state imprisons more of its people, per head, than any of its U.S. counterparts. First among Americans means first in the world. Louisiana's incarceration rate is nearly five times Iran's, 13 times China's and 20 times Germany's.

Louisiana is the world's prison capital

How can he run for president with being the governor of a state like his?

Surprise no one from the MSM has brought this up?
