Dunno where those 'figures' are coming from but less than 1% of the US population is in prison.
But again if there is blame to be assigned that goes to politicians, and lawmakers.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), 2,266,800 adults were incarcerated in U.S. federal and state prisons, and county jails at year-end 2011 – about 0.94% of adults in the U.S. resident population

Last time I checked the US population is over 330 million.

Yeah it is embarrassing.
Because from country to country how, and why people end up in prison are not the same in any one country.
Dunno some people are ignoring that.
For them all to be comparable they would have to be the EXACT same.

In a lot of countries , they dont need prisons. They just execute them after the trial (if there was a trial)...PEACE

You can expect that to happen when putting people into prison has become a profit making business. This is why our prison system needs to be overhauled and the profit needs to be taken out of it.
Louisiana is the world's prison capital. The state imprisons more of its people, per head, than any of its U.S. counterparts. First among Americans means first in the world. Louisiana's incarceration rate is nearly five times Iran's, 13 times China's and 20 times Germany's.
