You must have missed the word "militant."

Would a nominal Muslim theocracy deserve as much respect as this theoretical nominal Christian one you speak of? If not, then I'd have to say that no nominal theocracy deserves respect, otherwise there is a bit of bias going into the argument, and bias and politics don't really mix well.

nom·i·nal/ˈnämən(ə)l/
adjective
(of a role or status) existing in name only.
(of a price or amount of money) very small; far below the real value or cost.
(of a quantity or dimension, especially of manufactured articles) stated or expressed but not necessarily corresponding exactly to the real value.
(chiefly in the context of space travel) functioning normally or acceptably.

Not my idea at all.

I used nominal intentionally. Since technically, we are told over and over, that such things would be against the stated intentions of both faiths.

I was talking about a nominal Muslim theocracy, not a militant one. A militant Christian theocracy is just as likely as a Muslim one.

Would a "nominal" Muslim theocracy deserve as much respect as you believe a Christian one deserves?

Let me preface this thread off with this: I am not trying to bait anyone or troll. The title is meant to be a little lighthearted but hopefully the thread will be informative with interesting debate/discussion about a hypothetical. This is something I have been pondering since the SCOTUS ruling two weeks ago and some of the more colourful headlines in the wake of it.

If tomorrow America suddenly declared itself a theocracy which denomination would be the authority?

Simple. The most outspoken, active, and in your face ones. Fundamentalists/Dominionists

As Klassified says below, the ones most likely to take power in that regard would most likely be militant ones. Would you respect militant Muslims any more than you would respect militant Christians or even militant atheists?

So there is no hope of a nominal Christian theocracy? Only a militant one?

But the question was hypothetical, just as your statement was hypothetical. Say IF a nominal Christian theocracy does arise and deserves respect, does that mean that IF a nominal Muslim theocracy arises it deserves just as much respect as the Christian one would?

One of the witchcraft paths (as in not exclusively Wicca) would definitely make our nation a pretty fun place to live. Starting out sports events with a circle casting would be amazing. Inauguration could almost be like a dedication or naming ritual. Our money would have killer pictures on it and our MMS would be held to higher standards.

Marriage would become traditional finally with handfasting replacing the contemporary ceremony and apprenticeships for trades would be in 366 day increments.

Paints a crazy picture when you plug a different faith into the slot of what we have now. I don't think Christians realize just how theocratic they have it here until they look at what it would look like otherwise.

catholics are just that catholic. though they would want you to think they are Christian they are actually a conglomeration of different religions masquerading as Christianity.

they are considered by most Christians to be a cult like Mormonism, JW's and the like.

Baptist is not the leading denomination there are others who boast larger numbers than baptist.

Baptist however are have higher numbers of independent churches than any other denominations.

Hope that helps

To be honest, if America were to suddenly become a theocracy it would have to be from some kind of militant action. However, why do some of you think it would be a Muslim takeover when majority of America's population is Christian?

I was thinking about theocracy the other day. It seems to me that theocracy is probably the only truly successful form of socialism. Most theocracy's practice socialist principals and the people seem to do well if they are all on the same page so to speak that being they all have the same cultural and spiritual convictions.

Do you hear that far left crowd? If you want socialism to happen embrace theocracy

In all seriousness I was thinking of C.S. Lewis and how he was describing Christ future reign as being socialist. Due to Christ incorruptibility you would not end up with a totalitarian oligarchy or other such mortal corruption.

Actually, socialism successfully existed before religion. Socialism was cultivated into the original civilizations but inequality only began breeding with the introduction of religion and commerce. Commerce created the divide while religion excused it.
