i dont know if it is really a thought experiment.

anyway the other thread about people that dont know how long it would take them to get to their destination got me thinking about this.

i think it would be cool for you to try it on people

i do this one.

i say

"im going to say a word 3 times. when i am done a want you to repeat by saying the same word 3 times. then i am going to ask you a questions and i want you to answer...understand"

then it goes like this...always like this. nobody has ever gotten it right.

me---- silk, silk, silk
x-------silk, silk, silk

me-----what do cows drink?
x-------milk -that is always the answer.

ive probably done this with 40 people. varying levels of intelligence and none of them have done it right and the answer is always milk.

i would like to know if you guys do this with people do you have the same results

Technically, milk is a correct answer. It's what calves drink and what milk was intended for. Water is another answer.

what do you put in a toaster?

The first one is easy. It has to do with our brains and language. When you have them repeat "silk" three times, you are priming their brains to think in sound/symbol pattern that corresponds closely to the answer you want -> milk. See? silk/milk. They are virtually identical phonographically. Then, you further set them up by asking them about cows which give milk, and we all know it and have known it forever.

It works best when you do it fast so they don't have time to think. Odds are, their brain will automatically spit out milk.

Again, you're priming the brain. Toast comes out of the toaster, and conveniently, the name of the appliance is what comes out of it. So if they get caught out, their brain just automatically supplies toast because they've been primed by the name of the appliance.

The brain is funny that way, and the faster you set them up, the more likely you are to catch them out.

Water was the first thing that came to mind. I can see why milk would to others though.

I hate burning toast so always set the toaster on a low level, the toast pops up, I take it out to check it and then put toast back in the toaster.

Someone asked me that and I answered water. But they said silk, silk, silk times three so nine times. I think that was a give away for me That it was a joke and I'd be the punchline.

But the question was not what do calves drink. It said cows. While calves in this instance are cows not all cows are calves.
