It's technically not an EMP weapon, but a High Powered Microwave weapon. HPMs have a similar effect to EMP weapons, but are more directed and controlled. This is steered to specific target areas.

The pin-point accuracy is a blessing and a curse. It isn't a mass casualty weapon like a bomb but it specifically "targets" its vixctim(s). It's like borderline tailor-made destruction; literally, a "bullet" with your name on it.

What about weapons which need to stay at certain temps to remain safe? This tech would disable the power and potentially stopping the equipment or process which keeps it at bay; this is a potentially dangerous prospect in terms of chemical or biological weapons.

Well they should not had been working on them in the first place right?

So Zaphod?

Do you suppose that after this very fast one goes through and knocks it all out, that there might be a slower, more in-your-face version that loiters, has the same electronics package, and maintains network dominance?

Like an "territorial occupation" version, I guess.

Other systems are extremely advanced EW systems, that only affect systems while they're nearby. CHAMP goes in and kills them hard. They're using a stealthy ALCM for the body, to prevent requiring anything else going in first.

I am a little surprised to see them touting CHAMP as if it's shiny new...the first successful field test of "CHAMP - The Range Prototype" was several years ago, this thing ought to be wrapping up for production by now.

There are some flying CARMs at Kirtland that keep things killed. Up to and including people. Whether that is kept in some form for "production design" I don't know. But they're really friggin' AWFUL. (snickers)

Think of it as a VMADS on steroids. You got people trying massed ground attacks, or sneaky concealment attacks, or folk holed up in buildings in MOUT, they decide to drop that and do the safety dance with all their gear killed. It's like some damn video game.

eta: it's also really tough to fly a plane while you're doing the safety dance in the cockpit. Just sayin'

Legend has it that someone put together a video of some of the VMADS tests and intercut it with Safety Dance as an internal gag.

I wonder if this can be used from space and blanket out a country?

Seems I remember an encounter between an American ship and a Russian fighter a few weeks ago during which the ships electronics and communications all failed.
These systems are all supposed to be protected from EMT strikes but failed each time the fighter approched.

Could they have already deployed such a device?

Never happened. The Russian aircraft supposedly used an electronic warfare system, not an HPM system. But the whole story was BS.
