Might it be possible to implement a [ref] tag for sourcing stuff?
I reckon that the community will benefit from such a feature.

Example...
    [ref]http://example.com[/ref]
...which will create a subtle link.¹ < -- Like that.

You are familiar with all the ways to reference and link material here, i presume.

Foot notes at the bottom of ATS posts would be redundant wouldn't they?

Maybe I misunderstand…

On printed paper the numbered reference sources make sense. On ATS, it seems perfectly fine to use the icon above the post window for the external link. Here's an example of how to link to NASA using that method. No reference number necessary, so I can't see the benefit of footnotes here that link to sources as stated in the OP.

I was using the ¹ symbol as an example, I'm not talking about numbered footnotes. I just feel that it would make a long post look much tidier rather than having oversized links everywhere. If a single source is the main reference point then it might be better to use a proper link, but if somebody needs to substantiate several unique claims then plastering the page with even more text might make it look clunky.

Example (using an asterisk this time)...

A mathematician went in to great detail about 2+2 and how it
equals 4, which is the most commonly-accepted solution to the
sum. Elsewhere, others have claimed that it equals 5* or 22*.

I see you are somewhat new. It takes time to get used to different ways links are provided by members. Look at the post above yours from Arbitrageur to see how he linked NASA (the bold type). Clean and neat, but might not be obvious to new comers.

Hope that helps….

I'm new, but not that new. I think the point has been overlooked...

Big links make a post look clumsy. Subtle markers make it look cleaner.

If a [ref] tag is available, people might use it instead of littering a thread.

Dunno if I can really put it in any other words than that, at least I tried.
