It is interesting that these perceptions are often visualised cognitively, be it via dreaming, day dreaming, imagining, deja vu or other sensory visualisation. The default mode network (DMN) responds to art that resonates with individuals in very deep, personal ways, this is perhaps unique to art. Research suggests that identification with particular personally resonant artworks are sought by individuals, this interaction can influence the future perception of self identity and hence future actions and beliefs.

Some interesting research suggests we seek art that we need, subconsciously, as it resonates with us.

Thank you for your post. That is interesting about our perception of art being able to still allow the DMN to be active.

In considering this, it seems that when art is truly viewed, it involves a real personal participation in that we relax and release our usual mode of objectifying everything in our outside world, and allow the art to be fully perceived by us as real participants in it.

In this mode we may even feel non-separate from the art, rather than being a subject over against it as an object. The art then can impact our inner sense of self that much more - even drawing us into the understanding that we are not truly separate as some inner self over against an outside world, but that it is all one event in reality.
