Sea Turtles

Hope you like this thread I put together on these magnificent beings.

(Don't worry....The YT video I'm embedding does not show the hatchling turtles getting attacked by predators as they make a run for the sea.)

Some facts about sea turtles:
It is impossible to find population numbers for sea turtles. Males do not return to shore once they hatch and reach the ocean.

Sea turtles, like salmon, will return to the same nesting grounds at which they were born.

The first sea turtles roamed Earth more than 250 million years ago. It is believed they were part of the late Jurassic Period based on fossil records.

I have heard numerous friends talk about swimming with them. This is one of my life goals. Here are a few facts:
Sea turtles can weigh up to 2000lbs
Sea turtles travel up to 10000miles a year
1/1000 sea turtles survive from birth
There are 7 species of sea turtles. 6 are endangered.

I have had the pleasure of an escort from multiple sea turtles while paddle boarding. They are an awesome tour guide and they do wait for you to catch up. They will stick their heads up as you paddle and look back at you as if saying hurry up ! Also have encountered them on the beach when they are most vulnerable as they just plain sack out and lie there soaking up the sun. I will try to locate some pictures but they are beautiful creatures !

i think they weigh hundreds/thousands of pounds lol. idk if one could pick them up.

It is illegal to touch them as they are a protected species by federal law. I live in Hawaii and they are very very protected by the locals and the law. They are just simply beautiful and graceful creatures. I have not encountered the young ones small enough to pick up and would not want to do so as I would be afraid that it could harm them in some way and because of the law. I have heard stories of people in the water with them holding on to their shell and swimming with them but it is against the law to do so. They are strictly vegetarians so they are not aggressive as far as I know and seem to be unafraid of us.

Thanks for the information! I love turtles and have a red eared slider that was a rescue. It had two homes before I got him. None of them knew how to properly care for it. Had it for maybe 9 years now.
