The Genesis of Centaur In 1957, almost one year before Congress created NASA, the Air Force studied an exhaustive proposal from General Dynamics/Astronautics Corp. to develop a new space booster that could give the U.S., in the shortest possible time, a means of orbiting heavy payloads. That vehicle was to become Centaur, a high-energy second stage with a new propulsion system using liquid hydrogen. Mixed with liquid oxygen, this new fuel afforded the promise of boosting payloads as great as 8,500 pounds.

First successful flight was 1963.

Here is something vaguely interesting. The American Embassy in Khartoum was closed on June 6, 1967 after Sudan severed diplomatic relations with the United States.. It didn't re-open until July 25, 1972.

That telegram says it comes from the American Embassy in Khartoum in August 1967 - two months after it was closed. However, the US did setup a Interests Sections in the Netherlands Embassy at Khartoum on August 14, 1967. The telegram was sent 3 days later.

What does this mean? No idea, apart from the telegram was probably not sent directly from the American Embassy in Khartoum as stated, but from the Embassy of the Netherlands. Part 2 of the telegram makes more sense (destroyed directives) with the additional context.

Considering the region, the fact it was third hand information at the time (report taken from a "local press"), and it was 47 years ago, I doubt anybody could dig up any hard facts on this story even with unlimited resources. Shove it back in the "unsolved" folder and move on.
