Hello ATS!

Given that we are doom porn addicts here, I found this story rather intriguing. It seems that a former CNN intern got bored and started digging around CNN and found a video that was premade and readied to be played in the event that life, on Earth, were to come to an end. Well at least the human aspect of it.

I don't know whether to laugh or twitch about it. Let's go into imagination land for a second and imagine that nukes are flying, or that huge rock from space is bearing down upon our fragile little blue dot in space, or the zombies are rampaging through the streets... In a panic we turn on CNN - Because all Fox would be covering is how it was all Obama's fault anyway or would have one of their pundits weighing in on the political ramifications of the end of humanity If we can just bury John Boehner deep enough to survive, when he crawls out we will have effectively obtained a super majority and will finally be able to cancel Obamaphones and Obamacare...... So we turn to CNN hoping to see footage of whatever disaster is about to smash us into oblivion.

Only that's not what we get.

What we do get is:

HUHWAH???

Now for those old enough to remember a world before cable, back when we only had five or six stations total, we might recall that the networks actually did sign off each night and went to static. When this happened the last thing that they'd play, each night, was the Star Spangled Banner ( Cold War propaganda IMO ). This was before the days of Vince and the Shamwow taking over the airwaves all night long and that dead guy telling us about how Oxyclean would fix EVERYTHING ( well everything, apparently, other than coc aine addiction, but I digress ). That explains the video to a degree. CNN was meant to only sign off ONE time - ever- when the world ended. So, given the culture at the time the video was made, the concept fits - even if Turner did sneak his religious views in and had the band play a Christian hymn called "Nearer My God, To Thee". Consequentially the same song that the heroic and famous band played on the deck of the Titanic as it sank.

The video carried the following instructions:

“Restriction: HFR till the end of the world confirmed” reads the disclaimer, in bright red font, on the video slugged “

With an additional commentary:

“CNN, once ever so thorough in its factchecking, knew that the last employee alive couldn’t be trusted to make a call as consequential as one from the Book of Revelation. The end of the world must be confirmed.”

So, in reality the video probably would have never aired - as Ted Turner apparently doesn't believe us mere mortals are capable of recognizing an extinction level event as it is happening.

I bring this apparently silly tidbit to you ATS, and put it in a forum not dedicated to television or jokes because there seems, to me, to be a potential conspiracy under it all. This video was made during the eighties, during the reign of King Reagan and the stare down that saw the collapse of the Soviet Empire.

It leaves me wondering... Did those in the know ( Turner certainly would have been in the know as he is known to attend the Bilderberger meetings ) have cause to think that the epic staredown could have had a much different ending? Was it a shock to the US that Gorbachev flinched?

We may never know how close we came to seeing this horrible video as our last sight in this life...

He might well have known something we didn't. He certainly has the connections and the money.

I'm really pissed though that this is the best he could do imagining an ELE and people were tuning in in their final hours/minutes.

No comforting words, no "we will rise again", no "try this and this while hoping and praying". Nothing. We get a crappy film that should have been updated to hi def years ago playing musical instruments as if they are somehow ushering in whatever cataclysm was about to befall us. The name of the tune is irrelevant lol.

After all the money that people have given him for his services, he couldn't put forth a bit more effort?

Shame on you Turner. Shame on you.

On another note... One does have to wonder if they have updated it and nobody has found/seen it yet.

It is shameful that a man with his money and resources could do nothing better to help the world.
I think he wants everyone to die...and this crap is the only thing the last survivors have to watch on the tube.

i dunno how much effort would you put in to an "end of the world show"...it is not like people will have time after to reminisce about it

"End of the world" IMO denotes a predetermined mindset. If the Yellowstone caldera erupted, for example, it'd be the apocalypse for a lot of people, but not for the entire world. The same follows for nearly every scenario I can imagine.

Having said that, given any disaster that might yeild the potential to be an extinction level event, I'd want the news to be covering it. You know, real experts saying "People in this region, sorry, but you're FUBAR... but if you live here gather all the water you can find and get to the basement..." or something along those lines.

But I'm getting too serious with what I felt was somewhat lighthearted and comical in theory. In fact I'm almost tempted to start writing a screenplay about the poor intern who ends up being the last living person at CNN headquarters, here in scenic Atlanta, Georgia... holding this tape and trying like Hell to figure out if he/she should play it or not.

There's a James Franco style comedy in there somewhere.

There's also the implication that Ted Turner might have had inside skinny on something potential that would negate the need for coverage - like Uncle Ronnie telling a few of his good buddies "Hey, if this Russia things goes south, our last option will be to launch all the missles...."

This one is more speculative than most of my threads, but even I need time away from the heavy stuff sometimes.

Imagine the size of the ego that when the world is ending imagines it is all about them and what they created. I am sure with my dying energy I am gonna rush to turn on CNN.

I think it was the wrong song.

Should have been this one,

I am still amazed that at the end of the world, people would still be in front of their TVs. Still, it takes all types.

There must be hundreds of skits in here. We could do a hundred comedy specials.

Mawww, the world is ending!

I know that you dumb clod.

Mawww, how about once more around the haystack. The Earth might move this time!

He he he.

for some reason as i was reading your reply it made me think of a really bad movie i saw many years ago named "sam hell comes to frogtown"....really really bad movie... it had an apocalyptic theme to it...it was set after a nuclear war i think and the male species was all but decimated and women ruled supreme,it was based on the only fertile male left on the planet and all the women chasing him down

If "being in the know" caused them to expect something which did not happen, then perhaps "the secret knowledge available only to the elite" isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Exactly what i was thinking as i stared open mouthed at this absolutely shockingly pathetic and weak summation of the collective dreams, history, hopes and futures of every Human being that has ever lived or would ever live on this planet.

Wow...talk about going out with a whimper...a half arsed whimper at that.

If I know we've got a 50/50 shot at heads or tails and it happens to turn up heads - that doesn't imply that there wasn't a fifty percent chance that it could have been tails.

Although now I am sure somebody will source the study that coins tend to land heads up more often than tails for reasons that science has yet to Heisenberg out...

Point is - maybe Ted knew there was a coin toss happening and prepared for the worst. Ironically by creating the worst possible tribute video to mankind ever. Makes me want to recall all those deep space probes back. At least they have some logical information attached to them. Imagine future archeologists and sociologists trying to make sense of the mess presented in this video.

I'd run this one

As for this video in the archive, it's probably an inside joke, most likely put in there when they were testing the archive database and the classifications of when to run something, as in the pre-recorded obits of the famous.

Why are there so many Russian comments on this video?

Translate isn't helping too much when I get results back like "inflatable", "keep this padded jacket!" and "moron smoked".

Just an educated guess - but I'd think this story is probably being propagandized heavily in Russia - at least I know I would use it if I were a Russian propagandist... The story would read something like "When Gorbachev Caved In, Evil America Was Already Preparing Public Message of Defeat! Putin Says Things Are Same Today..."

Either that or they are all just wondering if TBS is going to bring back the Office...

Maybe the video should be of US police executing people and beating unarmed protesters. Split boxed with starving children playing on a pile of trash.

That way you wouldn't feel so bad about it all being vaporized.
