Nigeria will be officially declared Ebola-free in less than a week after containing the disease that has killed more than 4,000 people.

Eight of the 20 people infected in the country died and there have been no new cases confirmed since 8 September.

It means it is less than a week short of the 42-day period needed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to confirm Nigeria has quashed its Ebola outbreak.

President Goodluck Jonathan was premature when he told the UN General Assembly “Nigeria is Ebola free” last month but his government’s response has been watched around the world.

Ebola outbreak: Nigeria is 'a week away' from beating virus

Well considering all the doom porn that has been posted about Ebola in the last few weeks this seems very surprising news to me. 8 out for 20 people died is a lot lower than the WHO's 60%-80% mortality rate.

Has this all been blown out of proportion?

It's being exploited for sensationalism and to frighten people no doubt. But it's a real threat. This is good news, but they should still stop flights from these areas to the rest of the world. S + F

I hope it's true. But then again we are talking about Nigeria. It's not like they wouldn't be motivated to lie about such things, right?

Really? This is almost as good as the other news that I received from Nigeria. I received a notice about winning $50,000,000.00 and all I have to do to claim it is send them a check for $5,000.00! They both sound totally legit!

My Nigerian prince told me it was true. He wants me to send him money so he can claim his rightful inheritance and go home now that it is safe.

I can believe anything a Nigerian prince tells me.

He says his country isn't worried about isolation fears anymore that it is now safe to send money there and let people come to the US and get money from the kind people here who would never turn anyone away, no matter what.

Ohhhhhhh, I believe him, I believe Obama, I believe the CDC, I believe MSNBC,
manical laughter ensues.

Yes, I read an article that said WHO doesn't want to heard about the cases in West African diminishing, they call it errors on the health care workers that are supposed to keep track of the infections and death.

Perhaps ebola is about to be over in Africa for now, but here in the US it may be starting.

One thing is for sure, big pharma is not interested in poor ebola ridden countries they want affluent countries like the US to be infected.

That's good for Nigeria. However, there are other affected West Africa countries namely Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea. In particular people cross these countries lax boarders, ones infected by traveling in the area-noted in Senegal- and others "escaping" in fear because they feel their Governments causes it, etc, for example. Can other countries, vastly more infected, follow suit. One may wish, especially now and if one trusts that, there's the UN 60 days containment deadline warning.

More than 4000 other fatalities and approaching 9000 infected.
Nigeria isn't the center of the outbreak.

20 people would be way to small a sample.

It would be like if they all died and concluding it had a 100% kill ratio.

Nigeria expected to be declared Ebola-free

"Nigeria acted quickly and early and on a large scale," John Vertefeuille, from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), told AFP.

"They acted aggressively, especially in terms of contact-tracing."
