Daleks & The Borg

Evening all,

Just watched the 2nd episode of the new series of Dr Who whereby the Daleks are involved. In all my life, i have never ever heard the Daleks use the phrase "resistance is futile", until tonight! Did the BBC have to get permission from the Star Trek team to use it? will Dr Who eventually meet " The Borg"? do the daleks mutate into "The Borg" in the future, the future the Doctor has not been too yet?

Would be interesting to see him materialise on a cube with Worf shouting into the comms channel, "perhaps is a good day to die, prepare for ramming speed"

I love Star Trek so much. It simultaneously preaches mutualism and anti-collectivism at the same time, teetering between the brink of two chasms. If only Americans realized that one of their top shows kind of promotes socialistic individualism and irreligiousity, there would have been one heck of a bible thumpin. Puritans, you know I hate 'em.

Well for me the Borg were a Rip off of the Cybermen, the original Cybernetic race that Integrated those it conquered were instead the Dalek were like space Nazi's but worse with the intention of exterminating all non Dalek life in the universe as they see it as inferior and impure or a threat to there own purity.

The Borg were cool but the Dalek's would beat them as after all they are merely Star Trek TNG's version of the Cybermen and the Cybermen who were unstoppable always stopped when they met the immovable force of the Dalek's who saw the Cybermen as inferior and weak so decided to eradicate the rival cybernetic species from the cosmos.

It was only in the new series a couple of doctor's back now that the Dalek's were redefined into a race that Dalikified some it conquered and the original Dalek's would never dream of polluting Davros DNA with inferior alien DNA though the Dalek's in all the Doctor who had mind conditioned slaves and some of them had implant's making them slave cyborg.

The Dalek were originally genetically engineered by Davros the lead scientist of one side in a war on the planet of Skaara, the Skaarans were human like most Doctor who alien's and only two of there city's survived both defended by force field's but the world had been lain waste in the war, So Davros who was like a mad frankenstein crossed with something worse decided to make a super soldier but he was barely a man himself being a cybernetic being, the product was a genetically engineered cybernetic organism whose lower body was identical to Davros wheel chair and had an upper body equiped with a weapon and sensor's, he being a megalomaniac after conquering the rival nation and wiping them out turned his Dalek's on his own side as he saw them as inferior and impure, several time's the Dalek's overthrew there creator only for him to return in later show's and his rival was the supreme Dalek who regarded Davros as inferior to itself.

So did Star Trek TNG have permission to copy the Cybermen.

Well like the rest of us who watch they are probably fan's of both show's and there spin off's, and take inspiration from one another.

Thanks for the history reminder, i had forgotten about Davros, and the Brigadier for that matter lol. Your points are taken on board. Perhaps the new doctor will not encounter the Klingons or the Borg although it would be great to see

When Nazi Germany declared war on Holland, a message was sent to The Dutch Foreign Minister which included the phase " Any resistance completely futile ". So i think Star Trek writers found their source of material.

It was a homage to Star Trek, who originated it. It was first uttered on Dr. Who In "The Pandorica Opens", the twelfth episode of series 5 of Doctor Who.
A badly damaged Cyberman attempts to replace its decayed human brain with that of Amy Pond, the Doctor's current companion. While doing so, it utters the phrase "Resistance is futile!", a nod to the Borg and their similarity to the Cybermen.

Good word mutualism.

I've often thought that the US public should vote with their TV viewing habits and not at the ballot box. I think we'd might be closer to a world that most of us dream of. Star Trek is an excellent example.

I think "The West Wing" (10 years) was another good example.

However, the recent glut of 'post-appoliptic' 'zombie' (wherein I include most 'reality TV) tells me the nation has very much shifted to a 'death wish' desire.

I'm trying to think of a show (US) that projects a happy and properous future for humanity.

All this American programming I have to choose from and I'm watching 8 out of 10 cats. I would be watching QI, but I've seen them all, and I can't stand repeating things.

Before all of this, Dr Who had the Seeds of Doom, where seed pods that would attach themselves to humans (and any other living creature) and convert those poor unfortunates into giant walking palm trees.

Aliens had those hatching pods, but with a more American in-your-face attitude of "so what are you going to do about it?". If you go even further back then there is the film "The Body Snatchers". Of course, there are also vampires, werewolves, zombies who also have the infection-through-a-bite method. Even the remake of Lost in Space, which had the bad guy turn into a half-spider/half human hybrid through a bite.

The latest doctor is more like the first doctor,a little dark.
This bollocks of the last few doctors fancying his assistants ruins the show.
The original doctor had a dark streak,for example look at how he basically left his grand daughter behind and said "bye bye,you're a big girl now."
I love doctor who but only watched the eleventh one out of habit,naff stories etc.Hopefully the new doctor gets even darker.

'Resistance is futile!' - yeah I caught that one myself, intrigued me.

Lots of mixed feelings about the new Doctor about. I like him, I like his questioning of his own integrity, I like his dark side bubbling under the surface.

Every regeneration (John Pertwee was my first Doctor btw) brings a new aspect of the Doctor to the fore and each one would approach identical problems differently. This one has hatred in his heart so he is more human than the others.

I am looking forward to a darker more cerebral Doctor this regeneration.

The exact phrase was used by the First Officer to the Doctor in the Doctor Who episode Enlightenment (Doctor Who) (1983] " Resistance is futile, we mean her no harm. ".
Doctor Who. The Daleks used the phrase "resistance is useless" in the 1964 serial The Dalek Invasion of Earth. It 1966 it was spoken by the cybernetically enhanced Cybermen in The Tenth Planet, and in 1968 by the Master of the Land of Fiction in The Mind Robber.
