Beijing claims it almost in its entirety, putting it at odds with countries including the Philippines and Vietnam, and there have been several tense encounters in the area over recent months.

US Secretary of State John Kerry appeared at the Forum to push for a multilateral agreement to end all actions that risk further inflaming regional sensitivities.

But Wang said: "Some countries outside the region are restless, and stir up tensions... might their intention be to create chaos in the region?"

"Countries outside the region can express reasonable concerns, but we are opposed to 'bossy gestures'", Wang said, adding: "China and ASEAN are totally able to safeguard well the peace and stability of South China Sea."

More of the US trying to start problems? This is getting old we need to stop telling China Russia and the rest of the world what is right and wrong especially when we the US need to take a good hard look in the mirror. I understand our relations with japan ect but we need to really just worry about our selfs for a while. Am i wrong? going back 2 bed its too early ..insert sleepy smiley..

This is a problem of Chinas making. The US is only backing up it's allies in the region. China has claimed territorial waters well beyond the international maritime zone which is 200 miles if I remember correctly. This would be akin to the US saying the entire Gulf of Mexico is US territory.

China is after the rare earth minerals and other resources found on and beneath the sea floor in that region. They want it all for themselves. Of course all the other nations in that region want the same resources, and many have actually formed joint agreements to get to them. (It's quite a expensive task after all to go it alone)

You know

When you have a country like Vietnam of all places asking for US help due to regional tension things should be looked at objectively.

From a few years back.

Vietnam seeks US support in China dispute

The Vietnamese government has ratcheted up its rhetoric in recent weeks amid growing public disquiet over perceived maritime bullying by China, which dominated Vietnam for 1000 years and fought a brief but bloody border war against it in 1979. At the weekend Vietnam’s foreign ministry said that it would “welcome” efforts by the US and other nations to help resolve the South China Sea dispute and maintain peace and stability.

Such sentiments are unlikely to go down well in Beijing, which insists that the long-running row over the South China Sea must be resolved on a purely bilateral basis.

I honestly don't see this as much of a problem in the long run as it's made out to be...

China is going to push.

Your not going to get a fair deal from them on your first low brow proposals, they can haggle and have the upper hand to do so.

They will be belligerent until something is worked out that gives them a lot and honestly, they have the trade clout to push and push.

Look... in the end, the reality is they have A LOT more to offer economically to not only the US but their neighbors in the region than what any energy or minerals is worth to anyone else compared to them given the size of the population, in other words you much rather have Chinese markets open to you than any of it is worth to much smaller nations, even japan is just a pissing pride match as the most developed nation they have energy options developing over time and a limited population to fuel compared to China but BOY O BOY can you sell China a lot of cars...

Bottom line China has the clout to take a lot here and they are going to be hard as hell to negotiate a deal with they will push for every inch but it wont end in war.

Truthfully... the whole Chinese military threat is vastly overrated, they just want a military that we wont push around, to make the cost of ever attacking them too high.

But their Poker face sucks... you can tell a nation that does and does not plan on going to war by their actions...

Look at China, 3 gorges Dam, tallest buildings in the world going up, constantly growing skyline... You just don't build giant targets with heavy price tags if your goal is warfare, imagine what a strike on 3 gorges would do? or Shanghi.... sheeeeesh

Now look at America, cities being allowed to gentrify in places, not a god damned new giant project anywhere, decentralizing economic factors... barely updating Infrastructure... you can say it's a crummy economy, but come on lol... a Trillion in Military Ziltch in new infrastructure... there's a nation planning on bombs going off lol

China is not attacking anyone who can strike it's pretty new coastline....

Im not a fan of US foreign policy in the ME it a interfering mess that's caused more woe than sorted.

But Its its stopping a huge cluster F in the pacific. No one wants China/Japan/south Korea/ North Korea/Taiwan/Philippines/Vietnam ect all going at it.

This is simply a Chinese poor attempt to create trouble among a bunch of countries that used to have problems with each othe but are now becoming unified because of Chinas actions. And they are all asking the US to be at the center of that unity. China however is terrible at creating good will. When the Phillipines had that typhoon China could have used the as an opportunity to show the region it was friendly and sent lots of aid and help. Instead they sent almost nothing. And the region noticed. China has this same problem in Africa and South America. It gives foriegn aid, and like any country expects Chinese companies to get a part of the action. However China takes is step further and brings in its own laborer which causes resentment where it should be causing good feelings.

The US is tied to the region by treaties:
The US Japan mutual defense treaty
The US RoK mutual defense treaty
The US Phillipines mutual defense treaty
The Manila Pact - US/UK/France/Philiipines/Thialand/New Zealand/Australia
ANZUS - Australia/New Zealand/US

While in addition to those above the UK has
Defense agreements with Brunie
Five Power Defence Arrangements - UK,Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Singapore

So for China saying it just wants to deal with ASEAN the problem for China is 5 of those 10 states have treaties with the US/UK. With several of the others pushing hard for ties with the US.

All these states used to not get along and the only thing that kept them from fighting each other was knowing the US would not allow the sea lanes to be closed. Now China's actions have unified them all. China has no one to blame but themselves in this case.

Of course Vietnam will ask you for help ... they're greedy enough to want it, and your stupid enough to go heads on with the entire world (now, that does say something).

And unless you looked at south china sea, on the map lately ... it's 90% chinese. So 1 for the Chinese ... even if you get a settlement now, you can be absolutely certain that they'll throw you out of there, in a body bag, sooner or later.

That depends ... China is also, at the same time, dispersing it's citizens all around the globe. In a few years, you'll be hard to find a town in the world, that doesn't have a chinese there. And every child, that is chinese, is raised with the knowledge of the murder the US and their allies, have done to China.

China isn't using a poker face ... they fully intend to go on the warpath. And they are building the aircraft carriers, to follow up on that.

Putin, is the guy with the poker face ... and Obama bin Ladin, is the leader who is playing chicken.

Um, you would be spectacularly wrong on that count. And just because the wording on that patch of water says China in it doesn't mean it belongs to them. That is very pedestrian thinking.

Any patch of water that extends from the mainland 200 miles is Chinas, that is by agreed international law. The rest is called international waters which means pretty much everybody can use it.

a reply to: crazyewok I agree with you, also for once.

This is looking more and more like the Chinese version of the earlier Japanese attempt at the "All East-Asian Co-prosperity Sphere" of the 1930s.

All in all, same old, same old. Two powers jockeying, with the "lesser" nations flip-flopping sides according to their own national interests...

That is funny. I am guessing your not being serious or else you would think the Gulf of Mexico belongs to Mexico lol.
And if you had not noticed it is China who going heads on with the World or at least the entire region. Anytime you have the US, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Phillipines, Australia, Vietnam, Myamar, Thialand, Singapore, India, Brunie, Indonesia, Malaysia all kissing and making up to work together against China you have to know that China is not exactly very strong on thr diplomatic front.

a reply to: criticalhit I'd agree with your "over-rated" sentiments. I'd question the current U.S. Military spending though. it's been decreasing at a steady rate as well as military downsizing/withdrawals.

Yet, the China sea issue does show intimidation/aggression on China's part. Almost universal discord with all it's neighbors.

I do not see them initiating any wars in the near future, either. I DO see them using intimidation to gain dominance over their region. They do have a track record of being heavy handed on their own citizens and their neighbors as well.

That cannot be ignored safely......

China starts hostilities with every single neighbor, most of whom are longstanding US allies (one was a US territory and could have become a US State), and the US is to blame? Wow ... not much to say to that level of ignorance.

Bjarneorn has come out in favor of Russia launching nukes at the US and Europe ... so no, he's not joking, just more ignorant than my cat when it comes to politics.

Which is why America's allies turn to us for help, and why China wants it to stop. They know the US can't be bullied, so they want to only deal with those who can't stand up to them.

It's like a 6th grader picking on 1st graders and being pissed when their brother who is a 12th grader steps in.
