Russian Federation Council Proposes Sanctions on Automobile Imports

Hours after Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev announced the list of banned food imports from the European Union, U.S. and other countries, the Federation Council called for an extension of the ban to include imported vehicles and medications, and to make it more expensive for Russians to vacation abroad.

Nikolai Zhuravlyov, deputy head of the upper house of parliament's budget and financial markets committee, said Thursday that President Vladimir Putin's import ban, a response to Western sanctions, was not enough, according to Newsru.com.

"Our government has not yet exhausted its resources for responsive measures, the introduction of which would have a positive impact on the domestic economy," Zhuravlyov was cited as saying.

The senator suggested banning imported vehicles, as well as medications for which there is a Russian equivalent.

"In addition, restrictions could be applied to consulting services and franchising. We should also support domestic tourism by increasing taxes for Russians who go on vacation overseas," Zhuravlyov said, Newsru.com reported.

"Talking with Russia in the language of sanctions is impossible to do forever, and our response must motivate our Western partners to begin a balanced dialogue on both economic and political issues," the senator said.

He also praised the import ban as a "unique opportunity" for domestic producers, as it would allow them to increase their market presence, the news website reported.

The list of banned goods published by the Russian government Thursday could still be expanded, RBC newspaper reported Friday, citing two unidentified officials involved in the list's preparation.

Now this should raise some eyebrows with the EU, especially with Germany .. Not only is Germany being asked to pay for the losses for Poland incurred due to sanctions which Poland imposed but now they will also further end up reeling under Sanctions . I am expecting E.U will not go on with these sanctions for too long .

Not only will these sanctions really damage E.U economy but you will expect Chinese and Indian Automobile companies have a field day with this news . With Brazil attempting to replace E.U for Russian food imports, Indian and Chinese Auto companies will also replace E.U .

Once Russia implements this this will be a permanent situation. It also means that Russia will start to make more aggreements with China and India to supply raw materials and oil. This will definitely effect the west and Europe in a bad way. What does Obama think, that Russia cannot do anything? Same with the European government leaders, they seem to ignore what they don't want to hear. Misguided beliefs can cause a lot of problems.

Where do we find these people running the countries, in a the closet hiding from reality?

The problem with Russia using santions is that almost half of Russias GDP comes off the Black Market. That is like the US putting and santion on Canadian maple Syrup and not really being able to keep it from getting in or people from buying it. The massive curruption that is at evey level of Russian society means that anybody who wants something santioned by Russia can still get it with relative ease, they just can not get from the traditional market.

That is true, there is a lot of black market trading in Russia. I think they chose certain imports to target that were easier to monitor.

The reality is the ones "running the show" are not in the closet.

They are the mmillionaires and billionaires that have invested heavily in the industries of China, India, and Brazil that are going to see their value soar.
Many of which are probably from the US and EU.
As with any action of any government...find out who profits and you'll find the reason why such action/legislation occurs.

Nations can crumble but the ones dealing the cards never lose everything. They have their eggs in many baskets.

The problem is people just bribe the monitors. When the military went into Georgia they found explosive reactive armor that that was empty because people has sold the explosives, units that had been faking being up to personel streangth so that the commander could pocket the funding. When they can not even keep the military clean I doubt they will be able to control much of anything that comes in.

See they make nothing, NOTHING I tell you. Interesting piece I read yesterday Russia is easing entrance requirements to people who speak Russian. Maybe we follow that lead and only let in folks who speak English.

Anyway when these sanctions take effect the West will feel them. Wait until they ban air flights over Siberia next.

We are seeing the return of the Cold War part Deux.......the extension of the Second World war that has never ended and will explode into military actions in the Ukraine and elsewhere.....There is no doubt that we are heading into tougher times than these....
I wonder what happens when we stop selling them medicines they don't produce, or the spares for what they have already bought.......
The west has invested heavily in Russia since the fall of the old regime....Will or can they withdraw now......
Its in my mind that this is all arranged to put money in deep pockets.....
The Organised crime factor in Russia may be driving some of this ..............they will make tons of cash off the bans....

Really, this is just another acceleration of the present economic warfare (and I don't know if I should even call it warfare since it's staged, it's more like wrestling and entertainment controlled by the same people) that's been going on for decades. Hit 'em where it hurts the most, the pocketbook. Eventually however, this kind of economic war fails to all out boots-on-the-ground war. In particular, the US with its social welfare programs and the cost of running government will become too high, as unemployment and welfare lines rise. At some tipping point, it will become more effective for the US government to allow invasion or create false flags to decrease the population. It kind of like the logic between GM and vehicle defects, if the cost of fixing the defect is more than the potential for law suits, the defect doesn't get fixed.
