recent weeks that he would resign his position for personal reasons. Prior to his cabinet appointment, Mr. Thompson was Governor of Wisconsin from
1987-2001. He is the 8th member of President Bush's cabinet to have resigned since the re-election.
Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson has resigned, a government official said on Friday.
Thompson, 63, informed his staff of his decision. The former Wisconsin governor's resignation had been anticipated as President Bush ends his first
term and overhauls his Cabinet for his second term.
Mark McClellan, currently the head of the agency that runs Medicaid and Medicare, is considered a leading candidate to replace Thompson. Please visit the link provided for the complete story.
In his resignation speech, Mr. Thompson said it has been a privilege to serve as Secretary of HHS. He cited the desire to spend more time with his
family as key to the "difficult decision" to resign.
