Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson has resigned, a government official said on Friday.
Thompson, 63, informed his staff of his decision. The former Wisconsin governor's resignation had been anticipated as President Bush ends his first
term and overhauls his Cabinet for his second term.
Mark McClellan, currently the head of the agency that runs Medicaid and Medicare, is considered a leading candidate to replace Thompson.
