Just wanted to pop a couple of pics up and see if anyone knows what type of helicopter this it.
It went over earlier today, extremely high up. Sounded like a helicopter on the approach, but as it flew over the sound became something more like a jet engine. Found the underneath to look really strange. Is it carrying cargo or something?

PS sorry if this is in the wrong section, I did have a good look but thought this was the best place. Please move if not.

It almost looks like an explosion is occurring beneath it.
I have no idea what it is. Never saw anything like it before.

Looks kind of like a Russian Mil MI-17 or Mil MI-26 transport/cargo helicopter.

These are used around here locally for training missions.

The photos aren't especially clear. But could it be an V-22 Osprey which is a Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft?

Here's some video of them:

Could be a rescue chopper or ofshore, something like this.

Bristow, the Texan firm that won the contract, will use the Sikorsky S-92 helicopter, which it already uses to transport offshore oil workers in the UK

The under belly matches the pic in this link.

Looks like an apache firing its rocket pods off honestly, right size and shape, four rotor, obvious smoke from rocket pods below it.........

I am not saying I am absoluteley right, but I have seen this IRl, and it looks right to me.

Without being specific, what general part of the world are you in? That may help.

I initially thought that was smoke or an explosion. But I think it's just a reflection off the belly of the craft.

Sorry about the quality, the original image was taken and then I zoomed the original in adobe.
The original is much clearer, but that far away you wouldn't see it.

It might be, but they don't show up on phones.

It could be a Super Puma then. They are pretty popular with oil field companies. Despite the fact that they've had some bad accidents.

I'm pretty sure it's the same Bristow S-92 posted previously, even the livery matches. The middle image shows red marks under the belly. Bristow S-92's also have this mark.

It does look like the S-92 actually, after enhancing the colours etc I can see the red marks even though they are blending in together. Shape matches too.

That was my first instinct, but with all the Pumas flying around over that way, I talked myself out of it.

I would say you are right, your image looks very similar to the OP's pics. The first thing that came to my mind is a helo with a fancy paint job.

Sorry Mianeye, I didn't realise that you had linked to the S92 too....

Brilliant guys thanks for all the input. I'm guessing the bright underneath is reflection, but it sure does look the same as in the link that Mianeye posted.
