This is a good question, and it depends on the particular kids involved. I guess we had a few close calls too but if you shelter kids too much they
may never develop a real respect of anything dangerous. We had access to some pretty potent fireworks and chemicals in those days but we had a heck of
a lot of respect for the damage they could do. And as my dad was a mechanic we always had dangerous stuff about our place that my dad was always
lecturing us about too. But there were dangerous kids about town as well. One my classmates stole some petrol (gasoline if you are US) and threw it on
someone before he set him on fire. Awful business and it makes you think. Then the kids up our street set the paddock behind our houses on fire which
almost burnt our street down.
But I guess the kids of today have their own issues they have to learn to deal with that my generation did not. Such as designer drugs and self harm.
Give me some gunpowder and matches to play with any day, its safer!
