Fractal robots are ideally suited to provide a first approximation synthesis of a holodeck system. Holodeck is short for holographic projection deck - a widely discussed concept in holography made popular in Star Trek series where a person can enter a chamber and interact with holograms as through they were real. Holodecks of that types cannot be built at present but in the not too distant future a mass entertainment system that offers all the thrills of a real holodeck system could be built.
What is a holodeck? A holodeck adds Hardware Reality (HR) to Virtual Reality (VR). At present, off the shelf virtual reality helmets exist. To build a holodeck, the subject wears a virtual reality helmet and a virtual reality glove, and then enters a room built of shape changing fractal robotic cubes. The subject then order a chair to appear by waving his hands, the fractal robots receive the signal and change shape to synthesize a chair. The subject then walk up to the chair and sits down on what is now hard reality added to virtual reality. Figure 1 above shows how windows, walls and other objects can be made to appear. This system is a very good first approximation of a holodeck system!!
Can the virtual reality helmet be avoided.
At present this will be not possible. If the subjects looks at the sky expecting to see clouds, then it will be difficult as the subject is inside a room. Also if two subjects were in the same vicinity of each other with different views, then the real space available would clash with virtual space (which may be displaying a vast open space for example).
Virtual reality helmet will always be needed to feed the eyes with information that fools the subject into believing that they are somewhere they are not. The virtual reality helmet allows the physical environment size to be reduced. When the subject is close to an object the robots change shape to approximate that object. Only the objects that we are close to need to be synthesized to save energy while the other objects can be masked out using the virtual reality headset.
Fractal robots add hard reality to virtual reality. It is also desirable to add extra tooling to fractal robots to allow more varied interaction with the subject. Fractal robots tools can provide the tactile feedback to further the illusion. The resolution of the robotic cubes determine the finest features resolved to the human touch. The smaller the fractal cube, the better the approximation. By installing sensors in the cubes, cubes can move according to pressure applied. The sensors within the robotic cubes gives the robot reactive behavior such that if the subject thinks the surface of an object should be soft, but it is build of fractal robots, then sensors can be made to sag the material to much the same degree as would be expected of a soft material! The smaller the cubes, the better the approximation. In well defined environments, where the options to view and interact have been pre-limited, tooling such as a real mattress can be put out to recreate soft surface.
knock off the 1-2 sentence stuff, 'kay?
