Even if the Tokyo raids killed more than the atomic drops they did not produce the birth defects and radioactive poisoning of the populace and land.

Thanx for the link by the way.

Definately not a fast acting weapon.

Look how long it takes to burn a drone.

How is it going to deal with 5 or 10 or 20 missiles fired at it at Mach speeds?

They're wasting their money if this is just for use against drones and boats.

They already scrapped the airbourne lasers for this reason. Too costly and impractical.

We don't know for sure whether the laser was o. Full power or not,

The airborne laser was scrapped because it was indeed impractical that does t mean the idea of airborne lasers has been canned, if the naval based laser is only be used against drones then again it is impractical...

Light is faster than a missile, development will continue, again if bigger land base or space based lasers were if they're not already constructed then I think missiles are likely already obsolete

The problem is the air, and the many things floating in the air.

Smoke, fog, clouds, dust, bugs, anything in the lasers path can make the laser non-lethal. Even just high winds, and lots of air turbulence will disrupt a laser. It has always been the biggest hurdle for weaponized lasers, and will always be the problem.

I have a question. When your laser can burn through steel why does it not vaporize water in the air? Im sure it can and will cut its own path IF the beam is continuous but yeah at reduced range but still close enough to defend the ship.

FEL laser

Go here. Raytheon expects to have a FEL version of LAWS by 2018 for the big daddy version that according to estimate will ignore fog and rain due to its power output.
