I don't know what to say..... Ummm....?

If you're talking tech with Americans, you may want to avoid using any jargon.
A recent study found that many Americans are lost when it comes to tech-related terms, with 11% saying that they thought HTML — a language that is used to create websites — was a sexually transmitted disease.

HTML would sound like a nasty one too, huh? Long name. Lots of letters. Eeeek! I'm glad 10% are that....errr...technically challenged. Oh, that's not quite all.

77% of respondents could not identify what SEO means.
SEO stands for "Search-Engine Optimization"

27% identified "gigabyte" as an insect commonly found in South America.
A gigabyte is a measurement unit for the storage capacity of an electronic device.

42% said they believed a "motherboard" was "the deck of a cruise ship."
A motherboard is usually a circuit board that holds many of the key components of a computer.
Source (Spacing Adjusted)

World...really...it's not all our fault. We aren't all that bad. Honestly.

(Hops off to ponder the phenomenon of how some folks manage to get through each day intact)

Are 1 in 10 Americans programmers or developers? If so, then I would be concerned...

1 out of 2 Americans couldn't tell you what the first ten amendments of the Bill of Rights happen to be.

This is the litmus test??

Please.

Ask them who the top contestants are on "Dancing with the Stars", and ding ding ding...we have a winner.

Count me in with the abysmally ignorant of this jargon---altho---I do know what HTML is, but some of the others----???
What you must remember is the large percentage of the population out there (most of us over 50 years of age) who did not grow up with a gadget in their homes, much less their hands. Many of us can make use of the machine, be it a computer or a car, without knowing about the magic spells that are used to make them perform. That's why we pay the wizards to perform their magic when something goes wrong...and are thankful that those wizards exist.

Well... it would be easier if you all stop calling it "THE Ukraine"... its Ukraine. Theres no "THE".

Example "Where are you from" "I'm from Ukraine"
"what time is it in Ukraine right now?" "well right now in Ukraine is about 7am"
"Is Russia about to open a can of whoop-ass on Ukraine?" "Quite possible old chap and Ukraine cant do sh.t about it"

See the examples?

Older folks aside, I personally tend to be the jack of all trades type. Not an expert on anything really, but try to learn a little bit about everything if possible, e.g. fixing my own PC, vehicles, things around the house, etc.. I think most people rely too much on other people to do these things for them and in the process, lose their drive to learn anything.

Add that with the average attention span of most people whom care more about their favorite show than learning of something that isn't as stimulating and you have a populace of "idiot specialists".

And no, I'm not saying everyone should go out and learn how to do everything, but basic non-specialized things (such as HTML, which has been around quite awhile) you would think just about everyone would have at least come across eventually. Apparently not.

Again, I don't apply this to older people.

Well, from the lack of wit and simple grammar skills, it would appear you're in good company.

Let's hope the draw stays closed...

All I have to say about this is that I viewed HTML and CSS much the same way when I was in college (as a disease to be avoided). I absolutely hated my web design course and barely passed. Some people find coding websites from scratch easy and enjoyable. I am not one of them.

Rotfl, you win the interwebs, buddy. Https must be Andromeda strain, lol

I used to have a webpage in HTML, back in the Internet Jurassic Period otherwise known as "The Geocities & Angelfire Days." I had an HTML For Dummies book, I was self-taught completely, the book just helped a bit once in a while. A friend saw it on my shelf years later and asked if I was learning sign language.

I can understand if the older generations don't understand some of the technical lingo. My mom certainly doesn't (I can't tell you how many times I've explained the difference between KB, MB, GB & TB because she can't remember which is which) She also used to think turning off the computer was a simple as yanking the plug from the wall, no shutdown needed (all knowledgeable folks can commence freaking out) And was very confused as to why 3.5 floppys can't fit in a disc drive.

Best one yet was a question she asked once about a Java update, "Java? Why does my computer need coffee?? Where do the grounds go?"

Do you happen to live in The United States old chap? Or The British Isles?
Didn't The Ukraine used to be called Ukrainia?
Russia was THE USSR before.

I don't think most people would know what HTML is, hyper text markup language is.

@ the "oh Americans are so dumb" crowd: With the possible exceptions of high-education countries such as Finland and Japan, this kind of stupidity is not exclusive to America, its global.
