Etihad Airways flight EY461, from Melbourne to Abu Dhabi diverted to Jakarta on Monday, after multiple fire alarms in the lavatories. It's not clear if any passengers were removed in Jakarta. After a short delay the aircraft departed to continue on to Abu Dhabi, with strict controls on passenger movement, they continued to get alarms, with the next one going off two hours prior to landing.

After that alarm, cabin service was suspended, and the flight attendants took up station at all the lavatories, going so far as to check the trash, and lavatory after each passenger left it. Twelve passengers are now in custody of Abu Dhabi security forces.

Passengers report that the crew handled the incident with total professionalism, and remained firmly in control of the situation, and kept passengers from panicking.

(CNN) -- A reported arsonist on board an Etihad Airways flight is being blamed for an emergency landing.
According to Etihad Airways, flight EY461 from Melbourne to Abu Dhabi had to make an emergency stop in Jakarta on Monday after smoke was detected in bathrooms mid-flight.
"It was very smoky, and it felt like the aircraft had filled with smoke," said passenger Sarah Jefferey, as reported by the Sydney Morning Herald.
"When smoke was detected in two of the toilets ... the captain decided to divert the aircraft as a precautionary measure and land in Jakarta in order to allow the authorities to assist him to conduct a security assessment of the situation," said the airline in a statement.
