I still remember, from long ago
The beautiful flower that I had to let go
It wasn't that it was ugly and unpretty
nor that it was vile, unkept and gritty.

That long winter day was bright and glowing
mostly from all the snow that had been blowing
The harsh winter air moving the pink petals
making her tears shine like silver metal

The day I lost the flower was S.A.D. indeed
As the flower blossomed, I withered to a degree
The flower's ever encompassing vine
Continued to stay rooted in my spine.

In all fairness, it wasn't meant to be
between my warm Lily & me
She clung to summer, I to winter
cold was the heat that caused us to splinter

Another Valentines day, past and down,
And not another rose to be found
That doesn't mean I'll give up hope
Because should I do, I'll sink my boat

There's another flower out there, bright and true
Who know, it may even be you!

So those of you without a 'tine
Go out there and make a Rhyme
Send it to someone you may or may not know
And maybe, just maybe, a flower will grow.

PS: Based on true events - Not every Valentine's Day has a movie/fairy tale ending, I'm afraid.

That was beautiful. I'm so glad they are having a poetry contest. It seems all I ever do is write poetry and then I see the contest and my words fall out of my head for any kind of poem.
Ah well.. I know the words will come. And yes not every valentines day has a happy ending.

For real.. I really liked your poem. Lovely. Good luck and thanks for sharing

Thank You! This one isn't my best, as I've done several in the past that were similar, but seeing as they are neither about ATS or Valentine's Day, I couldn't repost them.

And I'm sure that if you write one, you'll make it

That was brilliant Foss, I love bittersweet poetry. It always seems more real to me than pretty poetry.

It's one of my tricks for writing poetry - I have to get my ideas from somewhere, and the most painful of memories actually make for the best of poems. Glad you liked it

PS: With any poem I write, there's always a "key" included somewhere in the poem so that you can translate what I'm actually trying to say. Started doing this way back in 9th grade - we often had to share our poems with others to proofread, and if I only wanted one person to see past the poem and look at the message, the poem would include a line or phrase that only they would know. I would have posted more of these, but they don't involve ATS or Valentine's Day, so I left them out.

Aww, fossilera...that was beautiful.
Made me a little sad though.
Here, have a *hug*.

**Accepts hug, and in return gives a cup of coffee, borrowed from Coffee thread**

No need to be sad - I'm still in my youth, and instead of being like most of the 20-somethings my age and drink my sorrows away, I prefer to express what I feel in words or art; it's quite a bit therapeutic. There will always be more loves (and by default, more poems).

You should try writing a couple poems like this - and I'll hazard a bet you won't know how beautiful they turn out.

Bravo!

It's nice to see the youth of today getting their act together!
