As someone else stated - hearing voices is all part of the experience. It's possible that it's just one of the vibrations (all the things you
experience as part of the separation process), and yet it's equally possible that it was an entity as well. Before you jump to the conclusion that it
was a demon, you need to remember that it could also be something that someone created, and unintentionally let loose.
For example, say you really hated someone - have you ever noticed that the hate for them kept building up, and then suddenly it seemed to vanish?
You've basically "created" a surge of emotion at that one person. If they projected, they might perceive that wave as what they see hatred as
(maybe they will see it as a demon, or they might see it as a parent, teacher, or sibling that doesn't like them). Not saying that someone hates you,
but that it's possible you saw something that wasn't a demon.
And, this is from my experience, but any of the entities you encounter when out of body can't really do anything to you except try and scare you -
The more fear you have of them, the more that they will bother you. Their mentality is just like that of a school bully: The second that you get angry
with them, be nice to them, or show them that you're in control of the situation, they will leave you alone.
As for the dreams, they definitely seemed symbolic to me (especially the tree branch splitting in two). Though I'm not a psychiatrist, you may want
to make sure that everything's alright with your girlfriend - The fact that she was trying to hide, and the branch splitting in two at least brings
to mind a breakup, or that your are afraid of one happening. That's what I'd do, if it were my dream.

As far as astral projections I have always considered my body to be my own why would I want to leave it? No I am an EXTREMELY vivid and lucid dreamer
so I suppose I do visit those realms, but have always felt my body was safer that way. If our bodies are vessels or containment devices to experience
reality perhaps there are other beings out there that would envy such things...
I don't know that it works like that - granted, I don't know the exact science of it, but it seems to be that there is a piece of "you" that never
leaves the body. What leads me to believe this is that sometimes, you get the experience that you are sleeping in bed, and you'll also be seeing
where you are in the astral. Think the official term is "bilocation". Another thing that I noticed is that when your body detects a problem (such as
needing to goto the bathroom, or an arm is losing blood pressure due to sleeping position), you are called back to your body. Maybe everyone has their
own frequency (or sequence/pattern of frequencies).
Now, that said - back on the astral projection forum I used to be a part of, there were a couple interesting cases where one of the projectors
accidentally found themselves in the wrong body (or in my case, the wrong "version" of myself). Granted, there isn't a lot of proof apart from the
person's story - but these were people that practiced daily, and have nothing to gain from bragging, so I believe them at least.
