That was the second occasion when there was "Smoke In Washington"
The first being when The British burnt The White House to the ground in 1814.

Lesson learned: Don't forget to show up unarmed.
If memory serves MacArthur was the Army's Chief of Staff. Funny how Patton and Eisenhower both made four star as well. There is a reward for attacking your own peeps. And don't think there isn't an Army full of 'em who won't do it.
Here's ONE who sounds like he's itching to pull your gun from your cold dead fingers.

That is true or so I have read but the excuse was they (the Brits) were foreign devils or something like that?...
The Bonus Army was promised money by the U.S. government whom they had fought a horrible war for against some other foreign devils; or so the story goes....

Up until the Spanish American War the military would get a bonus on top their normal pay at the end a conflict for money they could have made if not called up for service. After WW1 in 1918 they revived the practice for just that war but the amounts were small. Then the great depression hit. So in 1924 the Goverment passed an additional bonus for those that had served and handed them out as certificates that could be claimed for cash on their birthday in 1945 but, could be used to take out loans before that day if they wished. Everyone seemed happy with that. Until 1933 when a group of them decided to demand cash payment now. And so it went 43,000 marchers in total with about 10 to 15 thousand of them being vets. They built a camp and were chased out by police, they swarmed back and trapped two cops who fired and killed two of them. That is when the military was sent in.edit on 10-12-2013 by MrSpad because: (no reason given)
