This has probably been posted before so look at it as a review of history. The Government owed money to vets called Bonus Money which WW1 soldiers with government promises expected to receive.. This was 1932 the war had ended in 1918 so patience was wearing thin on the vets part especially since the depression was in full swing..

10,000 vets marched on Washington demanding the money they were promised. Hoover was the presiding president and he ordered the active military to remove the vets.

Calvary, tanks, some troops with sabers drawn; everything was lost or burned of the 10,000 WW1 vets.

1932 - young Patton, young Eisenhower, young MacArthur, Pres.Hoover - Walter Winchell reporting.

That was the second occasion when there was "Smoke In Washington"
The first being when The British burnt The White House to the ground in 1814.

Lesson learned: Don't forget to show up unarmed.

If memory serves MacArthur was the Army's Chief of Staff. Funny how Patton and Eisenhower both made four star as well. There is a reward for attacking your own peeps. And don't think there isn't an Army full of 'em who won't do it.

Here's ONE who sounds like he's itching to pull your gun from your cold dead fingers.

That is true or so I have read but the excuse was they (the Brits) were foreign devils or something like that?... The Bonus Army was promised money by the U.S. government whom they had fought a horrible war for against some other foreign devils; or so the story goes.... Instead of money they got their own president and some of the officers they had fought with turn against them and destroy what few possessions they had with them. They had waited 14 years for the money they were promised.

If I recall correctly MacArthur was ordered not to cross the Anacostia River in pursuit of the Bonus Army after they retreated. He claimed to have never received the order, even though it came straight from Hoover himself. Lovely piece of work Dugout Doug. I'm sorry that he ran away from Corregidor and didn't get captured by the Japanese.

Maybe it's true what they say ...three times a charm .... So sad in so many ways but I can only attribute it to a patriotism that Americans have towards their flag . Being a Canadian I could never understand what that is all about .

Lie to them, send them in unjust wars and treat them and their families like # when they come back, and nothing will happen. -Reality.

On a more serious note, Britain had a situation more recently when Gurkhas who had fought with The British Army were not allowed to settle in Britain.
Thank God The Government reversed the policy.

Up until the Spanish American War the military would get a bonus on top their normal pay at the end a conflict for money they could have made if not called up for service. After WW1 in 1918 they revived the practice for just that war but the amounts were small. Then the great depression hit. So in 1924 the Goverment passed an additional bonus for those that had served and handed them out as certificates that could be claimed for cash on their birthday in 1945 but, could be used to take out loans before that day if they wished. Everyone seemed happy with that. Until 1933 when a group of them decided to demand cash payment now. And so it went 43,000 marchers in total with about 10 to 15 thousand of them being vets. They built a camp and were chased out by police, they swarmed back and trapped two cops who fired and killed two of them. That is when the military was sent in.

Wanted to let all know that the link to the above site of Alliance Defense Marketing Associates is not the same Col. Bates. The guest book links to the infowars story which of course infowars got wrong and had to retract .... LINK

** While there are many in our Military that would likely do as they were commanded (fight Americans), there will also be many who will not **

Very Disturbing no matter what.

The devil is always in the details and it always depends on which devil is telling the story, No? I can actually see both sides of this in that the vets needed and wanted the money and Hoover wanted the mess out of Washington. Thanks for filling in a few details.
