We had fun with it. Our son's first time wielding a knife! The wife just hovered with a towel and a triage kit just in case.

Those are some seriously sick pumpkins, Beez! The ninja one even looks Japanese. Very cute indeed.

Your's are awesome... but my daughter was apparently too busy to carve a pumpkin with mom this year so I had to do a solo act.

How long does that take to start molding? My experience with pumpkins in North Dakota was that if you didn't get all the flesh out, it would go bad in a couple of days, so I'd think one that exposed the flesh like that would do the same. Though I suppose you could spray it with shellack or something to extend that for a while.

I hand-carved everything, so it took a while! I used a potato peeler to scrape the rhind down to the flesh of the pumpkin. There are probably much easier ways to do this, but scraping down the rhind to a uniform level with that tiny peeler took a good 45 minutes. The carving took much longer- about 4 hours. Your estimates are pretty accurate; the pumpkin will start to rot after only a few days. I looked up different preservation methods online, but there wasn't much of a difference in break-down times of pumpkins that used a protective sealant and those that didn't. So I've been keeping the pumpkin in a drawstring garbage bag that's placed in a box that isn't exposed to the elements by day, then taking it out in the evening and applying a couple of coats of water to keep the carving moisturized. No telling how long it will ultimately last, but I'll just be happy if it makes it through tomorrow night. Given that it's supposed to be Frankenstein, a little pumpkin rot may add character to the carving, so we'll see what happens...

These are ours for this year. I did Voldemort and my husband did Linus in the pumpkin patch.
