Australian Prime Minster, Tony Abbott, has stepped in to aid communities in New South Wales through fighting the bushfires of which are causing major damage.

Tony Abbott, who has been a volunteer firefighter for 13 years, has been involved with the fight against the bushfires through backburning and other methods.

Many see this as a publicity stunt. I however, view this as Tony Abbott being a strong leader. I am glad to call Abbott our Prime Minister.

He has been a fire fighter for 13 years.

Fire fighters fight fires.

This is what they do. I am not sure if the PM should be doing this but hey, it's one up on the usual speeches and promises. Good on him!

Photo op or not, he is still on the ground doing the job he was trained for.

How many other polly wants a cracker (s) are out in the thick of things.

Agreed! We wouldn't see the likes of Kevin Rudd or any other recent leader/opposition leader doing this.

Found this article last night:

www.scotsman.com...

THE Australian Defence Force is investigating claims that explosives used in a military training exercise could have started the bush fires that have destroyed swathes of New South Wales.

The exercise took place at a military base near the town of Lithgow in the Blue Mountain region last Wednesday. On the same day a bush fire, which is still burning, broke out on defence land.

So, everything is tinderbox dry, and the military decides to go start playing with live ordinance, stuff that goes bang and makes flames!

I am sure aby investigation will show it's not connected though.

Thanks for the info! I hadn't heard of that. They reckon the whole Blue Mountains area will go due to the bushfires. The NSW government declared state of emergency, and other states have sent firefighters down there to help out.

Things look pretty nasty...

Mmm. Still not sure about this one.

My suspicion would be a little from column a, a little from column b...

I mean good on the guy for getting in there and doing something about it instead of just sitting back in his posh mansion and "sending his regards" like most pollies would,

But hey a good photo op and publicity stunt aint exactly gonna hurt things over there in the liberal camp hey?

Still jury out on the whole Abbott liberal thing. We will just have to wait and see if he bends us over as far as labour did...

I met someone recently who knows tony abbot personally and the two are friends...and to my surprise turns out our dear leader is a man's man, and apparently a good bloke ....needless to say this person telling me this would not vote for him and nor would I.....he does not have the countries best interests at heart, he is just another global player with big fat puppet strings.....what you see on the surface is just that ...the surface ...you need to dig deeper.....but in saying all that good on him if he helps to fight these fires because the fireman need every little bit of help out there that is available.....truly devastating fires...

Doesn't make him a good PM.

No more than a fire fighter putting on a suit and walking into parliament makes them a good PM.

Rabbit is run of the mill tosser, as they all are. argh why are we so doomed..

why can't a decent bloke ever make it in politics. They all start off scumbag or become it. Like walking into a casino, if you don't get the gambling bug, you don't like everyone else there who's got it, and you get out before you are bankrupt.

I think Abbott is alright. I yearn for the days of a real prime Minister though. One which takes no # from anyone. I actually thought we were going to get that in Abbott's government a couple of weeks ago, due to their hardline stance on Asylum seekers...now they have sort of weakened. :/

It's a pure publicity stunt. Plain and simple. Australians will recognize it as it is.

Although any help would be appreciated ,shouldnt he spend his time doing pm type things like making sure that some of the military KC 767( or the older 707 or whatever we use )fuel tankers had a conversion kit to dump water ,send ten or so for a low level flight over the mountains and make it rain ,be out in two shakes of a lambs tail.

Nah just keeping holding your hose . we need an ideas man running the country

if Abbott dies Warren Truss will become PM?

I predict he won't because this is a publicity stunt/photo op with Murdoch press helping out. Apply some soot on face and wear the firefighting suit, big praise for Abbott for doing nothing, but being a show pony as per-usual.

This don't make him a good leader, a good leader has to run a country successfully.

Wrong again, He has been doing it for 13 years, also

Mr Abbott has been a member of the NSW Rural Fire Service for 13 years and is trained as a specialist breathing apparatus operator, chainsaw operator and tanker driver.

Maybe when he is done fighting bushfires, he can make some law changes so that these yearly bushfires don't keep happening.

Bring back rigorous back-burning. Clear unnecessary flammables.

Get rid of the greens and their sissy mother-earth worship. It has no place in politics, especially in a dry country like ours.

Good on him for pitching in, anyway.

As much as I am NOT a Liberal or Tony Abbott supporter, I will readily admit he is not doing this as a publicity stunt. He's been a member of Davidson RFS for many years now - my father-in-law knows him well - and is simply helping his station with the backburning up around Bilpin/Bell at the moment.

Good on him I say.

I'm in the Kanimbla Valley below Mt Victoria by the way.

Either...

He's a firefighter, and would feel like an idiot not helping out because he's too important now he's PM.

Or, he got a phone call from Hillary "never waste a good crisis" Clinton.

I hate him but that's a pretty decent thing to do.
