I know that there is a chance that this could be coincidence, but the more I look at it I get more and more convinced that it is subliminal messaging targeted to elementary school children. Here's the story...

I was helping my 8 year old son with his 3rd grade homework. A word search page comes up. First word on the list is use. My son found use but guess what else he found...SEX. This isn't the first time that people saw words that wasn't supposed to be found in a word search. But then, I examined. After the word search was the word ACT. So I thought to myself, "This all started from the word USE. So I have come to the conclusion that they are implying 3rd grade children to USE SEX ACTS. But that's not the end the more I look the dirtier it becomes. Please take a look for yourselves and tell me what you see, and if you think it's coincidence.

Its either a coincidence or its just the guy who made up the word search got bored and wanted to have a laugh.

honestly though i think its probably the later just some guy sitting at worked board

its not very funny but i still think its just a joke.

Yep yep. It's kind of like the phallic towers of the original Little Mermaid movie cover (I actually have that version on our family copy lol). It's amazing how low a disgruntled employee may stoop to be a jerk. Word searches are generally made through software so either it was purely random or somebody deliberately put "usexact" in as a word in the generator. Pulling it out on its own, however, makes it much more likely to be coincidentally formed.

I dont think this is a coincidence. Simply because there is work done on these things, the same way that I tell people that movies have over 20 top people that see everything over and over again, mistakes sometimes are NOT mistakes.

It reminded me of this incident from years ago.
Scrabble Image includes word rape.

Good find by the way, your curiosity, was well worth it.

Peace, NRE.

Crossword puzzles are usually arranged by computers these days. More than likely it's a coincidence but either way unless your son had already known the word he wouldn't know how to find it on a crossword puzzle.

Also how is a the word "sex" on a crossword puzzle telling 3rd grader children to do sexual acts? Again unless someone has already taught the word to your son he wouldn't know what it was would he?

Xìngbié is sex in Chinese. Unless someone teaches you that you wouldn't know how to find it on a crossword.

maybe it's a psychology thing and they are looking for reactions from students.

I have noticed that people in schools and in workplaces have really started going out of their way to psychoanalyze people like there are new sociology investigations being conducted.

Since it seems so insidious and so secretive, I think it would be more annoying to everyone encountered by it... than any amount of usefulness that would come out of it... like they don't realize it's just going to drive some people crazy.

You know what I'd do. I'd very politely go ask the teacher where the assignment came from and that you copied it and are going to start keeping tabs because you think they should have been more careful than to put that into a third grade assignment. then follow up and see if this is regular curriculum or if it was chosen by the teacher and compare that to reaction you got from the teacher.

It may just be coincidence, but in this twisted society... you can never be too sure.

Most 3rd graders are aware of what sex is anyway. It's not like the media doesn't use it to sell every thing from soup to nuts. Even little kids talk about sex among themselves. I knew about how babies were made when I was six.
Americans making sex a taboo subject is probably the reason why porn is so popular and why it is such a useful advertising tool.

I'll wager that word search was a computer generation anyway. Nasty minded computers!!!

I'm with you on this. All of those words can relate to sex. It's almost like they did this on purpose. It doesn't look accidental at all. Every one of those words more than relate to sex, though. Every one can relate directly.

But then again, so can pretty much anything.

Random words that come to mind:

Dog
Bananna
Cherry
Cat
Monkey
Drive
Bat
Team
Toothpick
Crazy
School

Think of any word you like and see if it can relate to sex. I bet 9 out of 10 will. Still, ya never know these days. I do see how it can be sex related though.

I certainly knew what sex meant in 3rd grade. I think it is common for most third graders to know what sex is.

You see, therein lies the danger of this if this is psychological exploration. If you were a teacher and a third grader pointed this out, you sound as though you would think there is something wrong here because the child knows the word. It's not abnormal for an 8 year old to be familiar with the word sex. I'm not saying all are, but most would know that word, I think.

I'd dig into it... I'd want to know where this came from.

When I was eight I knew what sex was too. My parents never had a sex talk with me which in my opinion is extremely irresponsible parenting.

If the kid pointed it out I'd just use it as an opportunity to discuss in a mature manner. Getting riled up just means your kid will be learning about sex from the worst place possible: other eight year olds.

Again crosswords are arranged by computers and there will be instances of various non-crossword puzzle words thrown in there. There is also supposed to be quality control and someone who scans over it to ensure things like this don't get published.

I think asking the teacher about it is probably a good idea, too. Regardless of whether or it is accidental or deliberate, the teacher should respond appropriately and edit that worksheet because a parent was not sleeping behind the wheel.

As far as the interest in children's psyches goes, they've been doing that stuff for a long time. Educational psychology is a field that really picked up steam back in the 60's after the NDEA of 1958 which basically mandated the installation of school counselors in public schools and mandated a lot of things to the field of psychology.

Scholars in counselor education credit the National Defense Education Act (NDEA) of 1958 for having a galvanic effect on the development of doctoral preparation in counseling (Stripling, 1965; Sweeney, 2001; West et al., 1995; Yep& Locke, 2001). This legislation was important to the counseling profession because it increased the number of guidance programs in the schools and provided money to universities to improve, expand, or develop programs that would train counselors. The NDEA also provided fellowships to recruit professionals to earn advanced degrees in counseling with preference given to those who were interested in becoming faculty members (NDEA, 1958).

Unfortunately, a link to the actual NDEA is not available at this time due to shutdown. Blargh.

Nooooooooo. got to be a hoax. Not by you mrno1, perhaps, but i can see too many words to either be subliminal or a coincedence.

I can see feed grief, leave, time, sigh etc etc all wrote in that one tiny puzzle, plus the others mentioned the chances of it been subliminal or coincidence zillion to one. Chances of a hoax or `joke` somewhere along the line is odds on.
